Ok so I've been working on this problem for about a week and I haven't been able to work out all of the problems yet. I replaced my starter motor the bendex spring in it had gone bad and wasn't engaging the flywheel. I got the new one tested and installed it. The new one is doing the same thing as the old one did. It spins up and sounds like a high speed drill because it's not engaging the flywheel. I checked for missing/broken teeth but there were none. It's grinding up against the side of the teeth instead of engaging fully. I tried to check the flywheel for obvious warping or loosness to see if it's pushing away from the starter but couldn't find any. The flywheel is maybe a 1/2 inch from the plate that the starter hangs through.

The only other good sign I got was my neighbor said that the cams twiched when I ran the starter. I'm going to try jumping it tommorow when I have another car to try with and see if voltage is the problem now. I'm looking for any other suggestions because I'm doubting it's voltage at this point. Someone was trying to tell me that the gear ring on the outside of the flywheel can seperate and it might have pushed back is this possible?

It's for a 91 AWD Manual, Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

You have one of two things. Low battery voltage/amperage. Bad connection

As you have an awd, the 3rd one doesn't apply.

Which is wrong flywheel.

Good Luck

Is there any way to check if it is the wrong part? I held the two next to each other and looked to see if one was different. I specifically looked at the domed part where the gear sits in. They appeared to be the same size. Does the FWD have anything obviously different in appearance?

I will give voltage a try tommorow and get back.

I'm actually having the same type of problem as you, except I'm not sure if yours is the exact same once I hook my battery up with the keys out ignition off my starter kicks on and just spins, I'm thinking something is not grounded right, I'm hopefully gonna check it tonight if not tomorrow, how does your battery cables look? also might be a bad starter before I swapped mines out, it would atleast try and turn over.

OK so this bad boy still isn't running. I've looked into the flywheels and there are different sizes based on AWD/FWD and obviously 1G/2G because of 6/7 bolt. Now my next question is do the 1G AWD and the 1G FWD have different starter models? I went to the parts store today and they tried to tell the computer didn't even ask them for the drivetrain so they must be the same. BUT we all know that this wouldn't be the first/last time the parts store was wrong.
