So, I just installed new topline revised lifters, 264/272 cams, timing belt and all its components. It cranks but will not start. I ran a compression test and I noticed cyl #4 was soaked in fuel mixed with soot and the others were at least lightly coated. The compression was something along the lines of next to nothing. My friends dad who was a mechanic for 30 yrs said it might be due to the lifter height, and is keeping the valves slightly cracked thus allowing major blowby. . They look to be like 1/2-1mm taller than the stock ones. The timing all lines up right.

What do you think?

Well, I haven't changed the oil yet, mainly because I haven't had a chance to get a ride up to the parts store. Just figured 'd let you know a couple other things. Ticking gets faster as rpms increase. If rpms are steady at lower rpm(under 2k) then it is not a consistent beat. I pulled the exhaust to check if anything was slapping around in there and I couldn't find anything. Checked for shaftplay once more, and couldn't find anything.

Thats normal for lifter tick. You also might have a timing belt tensioner that was not pretensioned enough, or a otherwise loose belt.

I had a friend over, said it sounds like its something slapping the valve cover, but there's nothing to be doing so. I'll be having another friend thats more knowledgable come by tomorrow. Maybe if you think of that noise it'd help determine the sound. Could the clearance be so close that the gasket material between the cover and heads being lower than that of a new gasket(valve cover has been off multiple times) be the culprit?

well I just replaced all the lifters so that leaves, rod barrings ... and the possibility of me droping a bolt or nut down on top of the piston... neither of them sound good.

If you spun a rod bearing it starts off as only knocking at about 2800 rpms-3300rpms. Not at idle. If you dropped a nut or bolt down onto the top of your piston your car wouldnt be running right now, well it could be but it would be running HORRIBLE. Sounds like you didnt bleed your lifters correctly and they are just settling in. And those compression numbers arent "good" They are ok, but not good, any variation of compression between any of the cylinders over a 14psi difference there is a problem. Most likely worn rings.

What's the difference between rod knock and spun bearing?

Having rod knock and spinning a rod bearing is the same thing. The rod knocks due to having a spun bearing in it.
But I believe Topline had a recall on their lifters recently due to them collapsing and starting to tick. Might want to contact them and see.
