2G No spark on 4 & 1

Ok, so I have recently aquired a non running 1995 TSi FWD Turbo and upon inspection, I have found that I'm not getting spark to 4 and 1. I have tried switching out the power transistor, coil pack, wires and new plugs. It was also throwing a check engine light for the cam position sensor before I cleared it. Could this be the culprit or does anyone know of any other causes of this problem?

Could be your CAS which is under your intake cam.

Going to agree with checking out the CAS at this point.

Look up your ecu pinout and disgnose it all from one location with a test light.

If its throwing a CAS code, its probably the CAS...

Yeah I figured as much, I just wanted to get some feedback...

Ended up being a CAS. I bought the car in that condition, and from the looks of it, someone let a terry cloth towel get sucked into the cam gears which in turn wiped out the CAS. There is a lesson to be learned in all situations. Use the upper timing cover!!!

My son is haviing the same problem, no spark on 1 and 4. He is not getting any check engine light. A mechanic we took it to thought is was the ECU but it is acting the same with a different ECU. Here is the strange thing, every now and then the car will run fine for a day or two and then quit running by not firing on 1 and 4. Does this sound like the CAS? Thanks, Kevin

Have you tried swapping out the coil pack? If Im not mistaken one coil pack supplies power to cylinders 1,4 and the other to 2,3. Hope this helps.

or check the plus and spark plus wires as well with the coilpack as stated in the last post

Yes we have tried a different coil pack, spark plug wires and spark plugs.

Yes you are correct they are ran on separte coils on the coil pack. If you have changed all of that and still arent getting spark on those cylinders the only thing left is either the wiring that goes to the coil or the ecu thats all I can think of I dont believe there are any fuzes that control the coil pack. If you say it runs good sometimes for a day or 2 I would start thinking about wiring problems because thats about all thats left that would be causing your problems if you have tried replacing everything listed above.

I am having the same problem with my '99 gs. I was driving on the highway and suddeny got no response when I pushed the throttle, even though the engine was running. I downshifted into 4th, the engine reved up due to the car running at highway speed, but still no acceleration. I downshifted again into 3rd and pulled to the side of the highway. As soon as the car came to a stop, the engine shut off and has not started since. The car will crank, but will not start. Every so often, it will backfire pretty loudly. We went through the usual checks. Getting fuel (even replaced filter), getting compression, tried 4 different known working coil packs, plugs are new, new wires, tried replacing crank sensor, and tried replacing the computer. But still getting the same symptoms. Cranking, but will not start. Spark on cylinders 2 and 3 are very good. Cylinger 1 is intermitent, and cylinder 4 is not sparking. At a complete loss right now. Going to try a new cam sensor tonight. It's the only thing left that I can think of. Hoping it works.
