no 2nd or 4th gear

took my car to a local shop to get inspection/emissions done and i get the car back, i try pulling out and when i shift into second the shifter goes the whole way back without engaging 2nd gear, same with 4th gear. i called the shop and the best they said was "well call you in the morning." is this a clutch problem? i just installed a new master cylinder yesterday and it was perfectly fine when i dropped the car off.

Could be anything drivetrain related, adjustment of the clutch pedal, clutch, tob, just about anything rule out one thing simple and go from there like adjusting the clutch pedal. MAybe a inspection of the cltuch, tob, and pressure plate, or maybe the transmission is near being toast.

Check the shifter linkage on top of the transmission? If you can have a friend inside shifting in and out of those gears (with car in park and off) to see if you can see any binding. How does feel shifting into reverse?

Sounds like a linkage issue. Check your cables from the shifter to the trans. Make sure everything is connected and is in good working order.

This is definitely a problem with the shift cables. It is kind of weird that it was fine when you dropped it off and now it isn't . I kind of sounds like someone at the shop decided to take it for test drive and was slamming some gears or something and damaged the shifter cables.

Way you got to look at it is, all the other gears work and engage fine. Just 2 and 4 don't. Either cables or internal trans. Either way I would place the blame on the shop. If they replaced something on it they probaly test drove it before they gave it back.
