no 1st or 2nd gear

Since i have had this car it has not had 1st or 2nd. I have two sets of shifter cables tried both and tried adjusting the shifter still no change.

Is it that it grinds and won;t go in or is it like as far left as possible only gets your to 3 &4? If it simply that it wont go far enought over to the left then your left-right cable is out of adjust.

it doesn't grind. The shifter moves over to where 1st should be but there isnt anyting there. I have adjusted it several different times in each way and nothing changes.

If your sure that its adjusted right ... as per vfaq http://vfaq.com/mods/shifter3.html (It also says the left-right adjust is your problem)
Have you had another person watch the arms on the trans while you shift to ensure the side to side arm is moving to all 3 places with equal displacment? (all 3 places are 1&2,3&4,5&R)
If so,I have a few ideas but nothing i know for sure. Maybe you could try and contact TRE or John shepherd as they deal with these crunch boxes daily, and maybe they can point you to something...

Ya i suppose I will try it again this weekend and see what happens with it.

I am not trying to scare you, but i had something similar happen last year after a night of hard driving i lost 3rd and 4th gear. It ended up being the little roll pin on the 3rd/4th gear shift rail snapped and i had to drop $1 on a new roll pin and spend a couple hours tearing my tranny down and putting the new pin in. I hope it is the alignment on the shifter, though.

Happy to hear it was adjustment problem, and not some critical failure. For the adjustment, did you use the vfaq, or what?

Had this happen to me a while ago, couldn't go into reverse or 5th. Found out the little bracket on the transmission was loose so I tightened her right up. Fixed the problem, thank god!
