took my car for a ride finally only to find out i can only shift into 2nd and 4th gear. in order to shift to those i need to pump the clutch at least twice. when i try the other gears they just grind like they aren't even trying to engage. I try reverse and it just goes into 4th. the shifter will go into all gears when the car is off. i have replaced OEM TOB and centerforce dual friction clutch kit. i searched for a while but only found stuff for people who can't move the shifter or just wont go in one gear. please help, this project is getting way to much of a hassle. thakns in advance. 90gsx

try blleding your slave cylinder a bunch. If that doesnt help you probably need a new slave cylinder or master cylinder. If the clutch engages right off the floor then you probably need to adjust the clutch pedal.

What kind of clutch do you have? Ya it sounds like you need to bleed it. Dopes the clutch pedal sink at all if you put pressure on it?

i have a centerforce dual friction kit. so how do i bleed it? someone told me to start with the master cyl and work my way to the slave? i dont really know how to bleed either of these or what kind of fluid to get for the resevoir. where the hell is the resivoir on these cars??? i read how to adjust the padal though:thumb: also, when i push the padal down it stays down for a second then rises up but only on like the first push. why would it go into gear with the engine off though? i'll try to bleed them tomorrow afternoon, i'll post the results, thanks.

Im trying to remember from memory in the engine bay on the driverside is the brake booster (big round black thing) to the left of that is a round resivor for your brakes. To the left is a smaller resivor (clutch master cylinder)

As far a bleeding I find the best way is a vacuum bleeder you can pick on up at Auto Zone. I think they might even rent them out.

Fluid just god old DOT 3 brake fluid.

Hope this helps

Zack

**UPDATE** so i bled the system, pedal feels better and doesn't stay down so far...and I NOW HAVE 3RD GEAR!! now for the bad news: still no 1st, 5th, or Reverse. :sosad: uhh, i looked at the HaYnEs manual ### i was thinking of adjusting my shifter cables but it seemed freaking confusing. anyone think that this would help or is worth a shot? just need more ideas on what to check/replace/adjust. thanks to those who replied last time.

You might check your cables and trans linkage for excess movement. First, third, and fifth are in the same direction. Make sure the little plastic block is in your trans linkage. If it's missing or broken, you will have excess travel and missed gears. If all this checks out good, take the cables off and try it manually to see if you can get it in. If it does, then look at the shifter and cables. If it doesn't improve, then likely it's inside the trans.

Good Luck

if i was you i would try adjusting the cable. When we did the trans in my buddys car we only had 2nd, 4th, and rev. We got all the gears after adjusting. It sounds like the problem since you do have 2nd and 4hth which are both in the same directions. And I agree, the manual is confusing on that subject:notgood:

my car started having the same problem a few days ago when i was pulling out of bdubs i went from first to second it worked fine but when i went to go shift in 3rd it wouldnt even go in at all...same with 1st, 3rd, 5th and reverse

Crankwalk will cause the transmission to grind?

Also to the original poster, make sure you trans fluid looks good, is the right quantity and the shifter is adjusted properly.

Just going by your quote I'm going to say you haven't bleed your clutch enough yet, bleed it until there are no more bubbles at all and your clutch feels f'ing awsome NOT just "better and doesn't stay down as much". I bled mine for 3 days before realizing I had a bad master cylinder which kept letting air in.

the shifter will go into all gears when the car is off. 90gsx

if they are going into gear at all then your cables are fine... like previously posted make sure you put oil back in the tranny but other than that if your tranny was working before you took it apart I really wouldn't suspect it went bad spontaneously, unless you really really beat it up trying to get it into gear.

And no crankwalk in no way causes your transmission to grind trust me I've had one walk and have also had one break : (
Start with the simple solution because most of the time thats where the problem is.
