So a guy is selling a 1999 eclipse gs with an aftermarket turbo and 420a engine in my area, originally the owner before had a v6 in it... he had an original post that said the gasket on the wastegate was leaking, and the iac needed to be replaced and that the car was idling at 4000 rpms. He has since reposted, and I have communicated with him, he says he has fixed the wastegate issue, and had replaced the iac and the car idles at 800-1000rpm. All that's left is a gasket that needs to be replaced on the downpipe. He took the top half off and replaced everything and had it checked for warping and had the head resurfaced. Should I be weary of this deal? The body is in great shape, as well as the interior, but I feel like maybe the turbo is getting ready to poop? Stats are down below what he did, I just don't know a ton a out these cars but would like to get into it. My dad is a master mechance and I work in a cnc machine shop, so I have the knowledge and the tools, but just wanted an opinion from people with a vast knowledge of these cars. My friend is into them a lot, and he says it should be all good, but he's bought some clunkers in the past.

The guy selling also has been doing mechanic work for quite a few years and trusts his own work over others, which I get cause that's how my father is. I would no doubt do a motor swap with my dad to it in the spring. He has all the tools and necessary equipment, I'm just curious if the engine is a dud? He said it still gets boost. Runs at 10 with the leak and has seen 15psi.

Any opinions and insight would be awesome

Motor and turbo are both after market. (Originally came with a V6)

Only thing wrong with it is the down pipe leaks where it bolts to exhaust. (Needs gaskets)

I would personally look for a model with the turbo motor (4g63) already in it and go from there. The 420 turbo swap thing is rarely done right and can never do what a 4g63 can. MTC Plus that V-6 stuff is just a cock and bull story so be weary!!!

Stay far away. They never made these cars with a v6...

For $2500 you can buy a 4g63.

The 420a is crap, he slapped an ebay chinese turbo on, blew it up, realized its crap, its going to blow up again, all of it.
You have to completely upgrade the engine internals to handle any boost. Still not worth it, its a damn dodge neon engine after all.

I'll agree the 420a is junk. My first dsm was a 420 with a 5 speed.i used it as a work car so I was ok with it being a major dud

Would this be a better options? Granted purple isn't my first choicr, but I think itd look good one the rims are black.

I say no maybe the body is clean but the enigne looks dirty and nasty and thous 420a have no potential just get a 4g63

If you lived in northern wv you could pick up a 97 spyder gst for 1500 or less right now. He said the trans is leaking fluid tho but it's a nice car. I'd offer him 1k if I had the money. Jut hold off something better will pop up.

If all you care about is looks, this just isn't the forum for you. You asked us, a board that specializes in these cars for our opinion, got a unanimous no go, and you still are pushing for it. It will just be one headache after another. If you're dead set on a DSM, find a nice GSX or AWD Turbo Talon/Laser; the FWD is fine too. These are also good if you want a nice looking car that is fast/has potential. If you just want looks, find a nice condition GS or RS even for cheap and get that. All stock no headaches no speed. Otherwise listen to these guys and stay away from this car. If you don't like that then don't get a DSM.

You can find a cheap 4g63 for sure, just be patient. Its worth the wait to start out with something good. I found my 91 eclipse gsx with a 16g & Lots of other parts... Got it for 500$. Wait!
