new trans but no reverse

Hi Guys,

I bought what appears to be a 91-94 transmission and put it in my 92 talon. I read from these forums that those should swap fine since the shift and select levers are the same. I installed the new transmission and the car wouldn't go into reverse. I checked my old transmission and it looks like it was from a 1990 car. The selector arm in my old transmission is shorter (old ~3 1/4 inch, new ~ 4 inches) . I checked out the shifter in the car and it looks like its from a 1991-94 car. So I guess the only way the old tranny worked was because someone adjusted the cables correctly. Because my shifter and tranny are from the same year, are shift cables to blame then? Will adjusting the cables correctly fix the problem?

Sounds to me like someone swapped a 1990 trans in with the right brackets. You will need the correct 91-94 trans brackets to make it work. If it were me i would swap the ones off the old transmission and see if that works. It probably will because you can put a 90 trans in a 91-94 with the 91-94 brackets and it will work just fine, and the different lever length will actually offer a "short shifter" feeling in my experience.

just to update. I adjusted the cables and the car now goes into reverse properly. I wish I thought of this a long time ago so the car didn't have to sit too long.
