Just purchased - previous owner tried to DIY repair - got frustrated and sold to me for $500. My son and I are taking this project together - excellent bonding time and he get's the car when done.

Now to the problem. As i said previous owner tried to repair but i think he has mis-matched so many parts that and spent so much money that he gave up.

In the photo, can you help in identifying why the Oil pump and block alternator mounting holes don't match up???

Oil Pump is DOHC 7

Thanks

The oil filter housing looks right. But I second taking the crank pulley off se we can see a little more.

the oil pump housing may look correct but i think this is for a SOHC vs. DOHC. Please concentrate on the picture where the Oil pump and engine block holes are - the holes where the alternator mount are not lined up - that leads me to believe the oil pump is not the right one

please reply!!!!

You definitely have the wrong oil pump. and I agree with the SOHC vs DOHC issue. But the alternator bolt location looks right. 95-99 Eclipse Talon Turbo 4g63 7 bolt Engine Motor Cover Oil Pump Housing | eBay

Can you check the vin# on the block? It's by the trans or on the flat part between the alternator and manifold

This is a 6 bolt picture but see how the ear is sloped and yours looks sharp. i think the previous owner put in a 4g64 block. You can confirm py putting cylinder 1 at tdc and measuring the distance from the vc to the top of the piston. Then measure piston 2. If 88mm difference than it's 4g63. If 100mm then 4g64. Also the oil pan is different.

Since it appears that you no longer have balance shafts, be sure to plug the hole where the balance shaft tensioner pulley bolts to or you'll have an oil leak. Once you get the right front case/oil pump.

well got some answers froma local mitsibishi expert who determined that the previous owner attempted to put a 1g block in and adding all 2g components. so now it will be a nightmare to determine whats all wrong - so looks like the search is on for an engine replacement vs a rebuild

You might still consider salvaging what you have. It is not uncommon to mix and match 1g/6bolt and 2g components.

I'd much rather buy a new front case than going out and getting a new engine.

If you have a 6 bolt 1g block you should really try and salvage what you have. otherwise I'm sure there a lot of people on here who want that 6 bolt block.

Good luck. i was in your shoes and it took me about a month of solid work to correct everything the previous owner rigged.

If it is a 4g63, 4g64, 6 or 7 bolt block, a 6 or 7 bolt oil pump still line up the ear for the alternator, a 4g64 uses the same oil pump from a 7 bolt 4g63, a g4cs (4g64 6 bolt) doesn't use the same oil pump from a 6 bolt 4g63 BUT, the 6 bolt 4g63 oil pump fits a g4cs with out a problem .
All oil pump (4g64,4g63,G4cs, 6 and 7 bolt) ear lines up, If you put a 6 bolt oil pump on a 7 bolt 4g64, the ear will still line up, Obviously there is some mode included, but the ear will line up.

I have install a 7 bolt oil pump on a 6 bolt block and the ear still line up.

Looking at the OP picture, He has the 6 bolt oil pump, But he has some sort of evo block I guess.:hmm:

To the OP, Check the engine code to see what it has stamped there.

Miguel is spot on. Verify what block you have in your car. Start here and pay close attention to posts #5, #7, and #11: http://www.dsmtuners.com/forums/cylinder-head-short-block/390960-block-identification.html.

Looks like a similar case in this thread that went unsolved, as far as I know: http://www.dsmtuners.com/forums/maintenance-repairs/412359-6-bolt-oil-pump-7-bolt-block.html.

To bad the guy from that thread didn't took pics of the oil pump before cutting the ear.

On our dsm, the ear (for the alternator) are all the same, If you check the distance and figure of the 3 bolt holes, they are not triangular, The Link you posted has a 7 bolt block, but sounds like he got a wrong oil pump.

Compare this 2 pic.
Fist is the 4g63 (it is from the link you posted) You can see the figure of the 3 holes (Red line is not triangle).

Second is the OP Block, You can see the pump is a 4g63 (Red Line), but the Block is not 4g63 (green line is Triangle).

Now look at post #5 (red circle), It is a 4g63, identical as pic #1 that I just posted.

All this makes me assure that the OP block is not a 4g63 nor 4g64.OMG
