Hi everyone. Im Dave in Northern NJ. I recently bought a 1997 eclipse GST for a project/second car and I bought it with an issue.

The story is its a 1997 GST with 105k miles. The previous owner installed the following mods.

A greddy type S Bov(ebay)

A full hardpipe kit with a huge front mount intercooler(ebay)

Decent looking intake.

A few bolt on suspension mods and other various things.

I wish it was stock but what can you do.

The car will start up fine after it has been sitting for a while. And it idles pretty good actually.

But when you start to drive it, when you build some boost, it will start to buck and spike and eventually the car will die on you. And it wont be able to start back up. As you crank the car after it died, you can virtually see gasoline pouring out of the exhaust. If you let it sit for a few hours you can start it back up.

I have replaced the spark plugs, cleaned the MAF and changed the oil. With no results.

Anyone have any thoughts? I cant figure it out.

Anyone wanna trade me their non turbo eclipse that runs perfectly??!?

Too vauge does it have codes? Seems a bit time consuming sell it as is and get something else. Look in classifieds for cars ebay, craigslist etc.

CHeck the collant temp sensor, mass air flow, and front o2 sensor and make shure it's all plugged in to start with. If one isn't plugged in it could be making your car run too rich.

THere is a grey clip with four wires coming out of the back that I cant find where it plugs in, blue with green stripe, white with black stripe, white with blue stripe, solid black. It seems to come out of a harness by the overflow coolant tank. The car also has a huge aluminum rad and aftermarket fan, Maybe its for the stock old fan?

Actually just as easy to start with, go under your hood and just look at everything. Check for things unplugged, bad connections, loose wires, rusted grounds and just try to eliminate the obvious. Never know could be something stupid.

Can you look in your engine and see where that clip goes? I cant find anywhere to plug it.

Mine did that a while back. For me it was a coupler that was pulling off at boost making a small leak and pushing back on everytime boost dropped back down ( I couldnt even get past 10psi).

Can't say forshure but those wires are not hooked up on my car either and it runs fine. I think those may be fan wires because my fans are on constant but I'm not 100% on that

When it runs dose it idle ok or dose it sputter even at idle?

Dose it have a check engine light on? Also u could try checking the clamps on ## intercooler piping for tightness to make shure boost isn't leaking out of a coupler

Just ran the car again, it does run pretty good at idle, My friend is on his way over with an aftermarket boost gauge, Id like to see what it is doing when it starts to dump out. Ill keep posted with what I find. I still cannot find any vacuum/boost leaks in the car either.

If the gauge goes right up to waterever psi your set too with not a lot of hesitation you probley do not have a boost leak. If the gauge stays in vacuum or barley wants to move into boost or moves into boost ridiculously too slow you probley have a boost leak or something is up with your wastegate

My friend showed up with no boost gauge, I am not interested in fixing a car that someone else messed with already and Im just going to sell it.

2500 or a trade

How long until I can post in classifieds? 30 days???

I think u need to be a proven member but I'm not positive, you can check the rules. To be honest if u plan on using the site anymore I would read threw the rules. There's not that many and in fact I've broken a rule before and didn't realize it until I read threw them. I belive u actually broke one by saying your selling your car for 2500 on this post. Lol I've made mistakes like that also.

Well thanks so much for your help insane. Sorry if I broke a rule. I guess ill take it to craigslist or ebay

Seems to be just dumping fuel. Plugs are soaked. It's just frustrating. I've been troubleshooting it for about two weeks now

Check to make sure what exactly has been modified...and double check. Or take it to someone experienced if you're unsure. If it's running that rich on a working stock ECU, I would guess that the previous owner installed larger injectors and didn't bother tuning it. Or you have a very large boost leak, both of which should be easy to figure out.

No problem and I just figured I'd tell u about the rules before a mediator dose LOL. But you should take a step away from your car and just sleep on it and go back to it tomorow with a fresh mind and figure it out. Don't get so frusterated with it.

Just a quick idea. Drive it till is stalls. Then pop your hood and unplug your collant temp sensor which is on your t-stat housing. Then try to start it. Mine will stall every now and then and I unplug it and it runs fine.

If the eBay bov isn't recirculated it can cause that too. Yes our cars sound good with atmospheric bov. But they aren't set up to run that way till you decide to tune it with something better than an afc
