New to DSM's, please help in decision making

Hey guys, and gals if there are some on here. First off I would like to thank you guys in advance for any help/info that you provide me with. I have been a part of auto forums for a while with my car, so I know that these types of places are priceless and a time saver as well.

My story:

I am thinking about going with a DSM as my next car. I have read up on the history and here that the early models (1g) are the ones to get. Is this true? What are the major engine differences between the 1g and the 2g (and don't tell me exterior, because I know all about that)? Where should I look for one, and what is an acceptable millage on the car. i don't want to get stuck with a car that breaks down on me, ya know. What should I look for when buying one of these used? Should I stay away from ebay? in your opinions which is the best...talon, eclipse, or laser? What are your deciding factors? How do the interiors differ? And last, don't flame my name, its just a nickname my friends gave me, don't hold it against me.

Well, Thanks for reading through this long survey. Please feel free to participate. i am looking for as much info as I can get on these cars so that I may make an informed decision. Hopefully soon I will be a frequent visitor to this forum, since I am comming from a turbo car background, and will be making some mods out of the box.

try and get a car with under 100k, that has not been modified, that is probably your best bet. As for the car itself i will say this (i think it is someones sig) dsm....trading performance for reliability since 1989.

The Eclipse, Talon, and Laser are all the same as for performance. I would look for an AWD model though. I think that the mileage doesn't matter as much as how the car has been taken care of. DSM's can be reliable cars, as long as you take care of them. I have had mine for almost 3 years now and I have not had any major problems (knocks on wood). I hope this helps you out some

Talons, Eclipses, and Lasers all have the exact same working parts, so none is superior to the others. Many like talons because of the different bumper and everything on the back. Some like lasers b/c no one knows wtf they are. Just get whatever.

If you're going for performance, look for awd. You'll love yourself for it.

And if you plan on modding your car, plan on breaking stuff. Everything on there is fine...stock. More power = more stress = broken stuff = empty wallet.

There's not a heck of a lot of difference between the 1g and 2g (other than exterior). Through may of 1992, mitsu but 6-bolt motors in all the cars. They were stronger than the 7-bolts that succeeded them. In 1992, they started putting 4 bolt rear ends on the back in stead of 3 bolts. If you can find the elusive early 92 awd dsm, you'll be set. The 2Gs have a better flowing exhaust manifold, but smaller turbo. Also, 2Gs run a little higher compression.

Read around here, www.dsm.org, and www.vfaq.com to find as much info as you'll ever want.

All years and models have thier highs and lows, pros and cons. All that information can easily be found elsewhere. The main descision should be what body style fits you best, and how much are you looking to spend on the venture.
