I just bought a DSM in February and a couple weeks ago it motor made a loud bang and the car died. I have sense then pulled the motor and started tearing it down. Not really a mechanic so I have a buddy helping me. Is it worth my time to see if it is fixable or should I get a new engine? If a new engine what kind and where can I get one? This is what the spark plug looked like when we pulled it out.

. Sorry I know it's a lot but also where can I find body or any parts for a 92 talon TSI. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Why did you pull the motor? What did you find that made you decide that was necessary?

What kind of parts are you looking for?

we pulled the motor because it was making a loud knocking noise like something was broken. and the spark plug in the picture was smashed up. a repair shop told me it could be the pistons but i couldn't afford to have them fix it. When it happened i couldn't get the car over 25 miles an hour. I am looking for a fuel door, front fenders, a front bumper, tail lights, front corner light things like that.

May have jumped time, dropped valves, valve pieces slammed into the plugs. Should have checked timing before tearing the motor apart.

all of the rockers looked good when we took the cover off wouldn't if have messed them up when it happened.

If you are not mechanically inclined, you could find a running stock motor for like $500-$700. Or you could get a JDM one from an importer in the $1300-$1500 range. That would probably be cheaper than doing a full rebuild, however; really it all comes down to what cause this one to go kaboom, and what you ultimately want out of the car.

thank you i will definitely get ahold of miller import parts. All that is left to do is take off the 10 head bolts just when we went to take them off we rounded off the allen wrench we where using.

Matco - great tools , however not cheap for the good stuff.
Working on diesels I've had craftsmen wrenches and sockets crack , snap , you name it they've done it but diesel is a whole different ball park.

I guess better to tear up the socket then to strip or break that bolt.
Have you tried different bolts , or is one that keeps rounding your tips off ?

As for the issue ideally you should of checked timing , ran a compression test on said cylinder that plug was smashed , since there was only one that got smashed.
There is sure to be piston damage on said cylinder, the loud knocking might of been caused by that piston smacking the crap out of that plug, or a number of things.

I'd get that head off , the chances aren't in your favor but if your lucky it's that one piston and some valves , but if you jumped timing (depending on how bad) there could be damage you don't even know about.

Pull the oil pan , check for shavings , shrapnel , anything abnormal.

Napa's tools tend to be pretty good from what Iv'e experienced. Yeah it sounds like you could have possibly dropped some valves.

It's possible the head has ARP studs in it. If thats the case, you won't get the studs out with an allen wrench. The ARP's will have 13mm 12 point nuts on the studs. Look down the hole at one and see if the head is round or star shaped.
