JUst picked up a 420A Turbo, i have an internal wastegate. what do you recomend for an external? or maybe i should keep my set up? thank you

Most work on a 420a is custom and done by personal preferrence. How much do you know about these cars? You picked a complicated one to start learning with.

As far as your question. There is no way to answer if you should have an internal/external gate with the information you provided.

We need names, brands, and part numbers on everything you have in there to make a genuine discussion on turbo setups... not just a picture. If it is holding boost ok though with no creep/spike I personally like internal gates better.

i got a deal on it so i knew what i was geting into. Its a t3/t4 turbo and i think the parts are all no name ... It has a idle problem but i think its because the exhaust manifold gasket has a i leak does that make sence? thanks for the quick response by the way

also the ecu under the hood has a sticker on it with a had writen date on it and numbers. it says december 2001. does that mean it was tuned at one time? i know how vauge that sounds

Boost leak test is in your near future! I agree with these guys, an external is only Neccisary if boost is out of control on a setup like yours.

That gasket being bad will not affect the idle. You should replace it because that is a boost leak.
The date on the ecu should indicate the year it was made. Take a picture of it. My guess is it's a re-flashable ecu with some sort of tune to control the injectors. I would start there.
Also get rid of that APC filter. Those things suck dirt right through them whale they deteriorate.

I'd go with what all the other guys said: boost leak test. If you have leaks you will run rich everytime you hit boost and you're losing power that way.

ok great, il take a pic asap of the ecu. yea the car starts up fine and i can putt around in it but at and Idle it stalls and hesitates, something is just off... im going to start with the manifold gasket and get some good fuel in it since its been sitting for a couple months and just see what im up against.

also i should mention that i was "told" when i bought it my motor is bored out to a 2.4L.... im gona guess i wont know untill i pull the heads off to see rite? i didnt even wona say anything because im not sure if its true.

Yellow top are most likely 510cc injectors. The black top may be a 2g 450cc.

420a can't be ported that big, you would need a different crank and rods similar to a stroker in a 4g, but I've never seen that in a 420a. If it is a 2.4L it's because who ever did the work put a 420a head on a 2.4L block.
