Ok..Well I've decided to come over to the dark side and get me a DSM...

I'm going to go look at a 97 Talon AWD tomorrow...Is there anything I should look for?

If there are no badges on the car,How will I tell it's a 4G63 and not a 420a w/ a turbo?

Thanks!

simple way to tell a Honda guy that its a 4g63t is by looking at the catlyst sticker.

Throttle body passenger side on 4g63 and drivers side on 420a. After looking at each engine seperately, they are pretty easy to set apart from each other.

If you really are going to look at one tomorrow and your asking that question you are in alot of trouble. Im not being mean but realistic

These car's can and will be some of the funest import ifnot CAR period you can get into for the money. But If you start with a bad apple you will get turned off so fast and think the worst.

He goes over alot of big big things when buying a car.

Make sure the owner is very very knowledgable about the maintence done on his car.
Oil changes
Timing belt
overall impression of the engine bay.

Buying a good runnning low problem DSM is like non other.
Buying a waiting to break pos that someone jimmy rigged left and right is worse then ..... yeah.

If the guy seems like he just welded three differnt types of pipe together to fit around and under to his FMIC. Walk!

Just an heads up.
Do as much as you can cause this will be a big buy I promiss you.

Makes sense..I've read all through the forum and I probably should have known that difference already...I'll read the link you posted...I'm a little nervous bout the AWD,but once I drive it..I should get over that :D

I see that the 6 bolt engine is "better/stronger" than the 7 bolt...but is the 4 bolt rear "better/stronger" than the 3 bolt?

Well there is one very simple way to tell if it's a 420A motor or not. If it is in fact AWD, then it is DEFINITELY NOT A 420A. As for the 6 Bolt being Stronger...'eh...it is just alot less, maybe even not at all, susceptible to the infamous CrankWalk of the 2g.

Here this is easy if it looks like this then its a 4G63 if not its the 420A

The 420A is a skinny valve cover thats alittle longer than the 4G63 an the engine is in the opsite way. In other words a 420A cam gears are on the passanger side an the 4G63 cam gears are on the driver side.

If you're serious about buying this car, it wouldn't hurt to have it checked out by a mechanic you trust. The ~$100 you spend getting it looked at could possibly save you from buying a car that needs thousands in repairs.

You do realize the 6 bolt rods are thicker and stronger than the 7 bolt rods right? I'd account it that for being stronger.

Ok...Went and looked at the Talon

1995 Talon AWD
122,xxx miles
5spd
All Stock

I didnt get to drive it yet,but I was told it starts fine and what not

There is some stutter at higher rpms..and the back rotors looked rusted pretty good...functional,but ugly...Some popping when u turn left or right,i dont remember which one...

I'm gonna go drive it probably thursday...

I can probably get it for $2800

Thought?

if the bodys in pretty good shape i'd say thats its a good deal but then again idk about that stutter. goodluck with the buy

Body looked fairly good.paint is faded is some areas but i saw no body rust

The popping when you turn is the CV shafts going bad.

That would be a repair I could make myself with the right tools correct?

yeah definately...I've changed out about 4 before I finally got my pass. front end fixed after the guy that had it before me wrecked it... but if I could do it then you can...although if your pulling out the whole axle if it breaks or the boot pops off it is hell trying to get the end out of the trans...I've had to drill a hole through it loop a chain on it and pull it out...but you gotta love the look on the guy's face at O'Reilly's when he gets back an axle with holes drilled in it ROFL

Being a 95, it will probably have the ecu that everyone wants in a 2G car. It's the only ECU that has a programmable eprom for DSMLink. I'd hold on to your civic and if you bought this car, plan on spending a chunk of change just to get it to reliable. I'd say with the back rotors rusty, he probably wasn't driving it and there is most likely a reason behind that. Good luck and buyer beware.
