I have a friend that just took his car down to a mechanic to get his timing belt changed. Well, Now it runs like crap at idle but he says it fells a little more advanced up top. But anyway, The mechanic put the timing belt right on its marks but now it just runs like crap at idle and it makes a weird popping noise through the exhaust all the time. Do anyone of you all know whats going on?

popping is just one of the signs. Does your car vibrate at high RPM's?

well, i do notice it starts to shake at about 70 and up while im cruising...but i thought that was because it needed to be balanced again.

yes, the timing is off. read through the vfaq thoroughly and check everything. The popping in the exhaust is probably due to the fact that it is running so rich. Intake cam might be off and your taking in too much fuel at idle.

what vfaq? is there somthing at vfaq.com that you are talking about?

oh, right...i used that whole faq when i did the job...and every was lined up exactly on the marks...right where they were before...(except for the balance shaft mark,) should i off set the intake cam like 2 teeth? that would be a big pain to do though...or is it because of the whole balance shaft thing?

If all 4 of the marks are truely lined up properly then dont change them!

I just have a feeling that they arent all lined up properly.
First take off the upper Tbelt cover and make sure the cams are lined up properly.
Do that by putting the car at TDC.
If those are inlined then it has to be a problem down on the crank sprocket or else the oil pump gear.

Here are some things that are tell tale signs that timing is off.
1) Vacuum is low at idle
2) Lack of acceleration
3) Weird popping noise in decel
4) Cant properly do Base timing
5) Idles crappy
6) All the timing marks arent lined up ;)

For those in San Bernardino Never take your DSM to 909 Motorsports. They Suck...They will mess up your car then refuse to refund your money...The wanna be Pimp that runs the joint is a crook. They are the ones that did my timing belt completely wrong...Then told me that the vibration( So bad it made my CD's skip.) in my motor was exaust noise...Turns out the Balance shafts out of phase, Cam timing was 2 teeth off and they broke my timing belt cover. and lost 2 of the bolts too. If it wasn't for me getting the second opinion I would have "Crank Walked" in a matter of days. Thanks to Leonard the DSM professor for fixin' my ride:thumb: Anyone in Riverside, or San Bernardino are should look up Leonard. Insane Performance:dsm: :talon: :laser: 4g63 Swaps to Mirages too.
