Hey what are you guys doing to find good 14B turbos. All the one I have come across have way to much shaft play. Not sure I want to go for that kind of record with a turbo thats questionable.

Do you guys think there would be any benefits or disadvantages to using a 7cm housing?

Probably not. But I used 6cm^2 housing just to shut up all the haters who will undoubtedly look for a reason to discredit the record.

I already had to face things like:

“Your car is a tin can” (it had full interior, all glass and other than doors did not have a SINGLE cut sheet metal part)
“Your car had a ton of mods” (most of which were hurting 14b turbo)

I didn’t want to give them any more ammunition ;).

You almost make it sound that it was something that you were entitled to ;). Records are there for anyone to take!

Here we go. More like something that I had been chasing for years and finally was able to do and was damn proud of it, that's all. Especially considering the minimilist approach.

...reason is that I just have an AFC for tuning, lame by todays standards, but, I'm not up on how to do what you and Leon have done in that respect. Which means I have no way to fine tune and make adjustments at the track.
Don't be so sure, I still have a SAFC in the car and I used it to tune high rpm power.

Let's see how long you can hold it!

Ha! At least I have until the season opens up next spring, so the record is safe for a few months. After that, we'll see what happens.

My 14b is original with around 110k miles. It has some cracks in the turbine housing that go through the wastegate passage. I'm sure it's letting some pressure pass through the wastegate, maybe a new 7cm housing would be slightly better. I rebuilt it a few years ago with a DIY bushing/seal kit. So far, so good.

Fair enough, I guess what I forgot to say is that I have never datalogged a run and don't have the equip to do so. I suppose it would be nice, but, like I've said elsewhere, I've got to learn to drive the car again. Once I can do that, and maximize its potential, I'll start searching for all the last bit. I've got cams and a balance shaft removal kit on the shelf, but I see no reason to use them yet.

And just to clerify, my main goal at this point is to just put the car in the 11's. If I can't do that, there's really no records to talk about for me anyway. I met my goal of holding the record years back and that was great. That may have been my one and only time, but, it was sweet. Mod for mod, I think I still have the quickest stock turbo/engine DSM in history, something I also feel is noteworthy.

All in all, I give you big props on your year with the 14b, if I can run 1/2 as well as you next year, I'd be happy.

Just rebuild the turbo. It's not rocket science, I've rebuilt a few. Rebuild kit's are about $90 and the instructions are on the internet.

Nice to see Phil and Leon chime in on this new 14b endeavor. My 14b Talon is sitting in storage again and has been for about four years. I am in the Air Force and when I bought My 91' in the early 90's I had the throw it in storage because I had to go overseas. It sat for over 8 years. Got it out of storage and started building it up for SCCA AutoX and RoadRacing. Trying to keep the motor mostly stock to remain in the stock class and beefing up the suspension with reinforced bits, braces, swaybars, coilovers and huge multipiston brakes and large enough wheels to clear large diameter rotors and slap some wide rubber on. When all was said and done and got around to racing the car I just happen to pull some good times at the drag strip with it. Ran a 12.1 in early 2004, a few months before having to put her back in storage.

Dave-The FMIC was also a mod that yielded me large gains. Back in the day most folks thought I was a fool for running a front mount with the 14b, but results speak louder than words. Like Phil, I have never datalogged. Everything I ever did was with the stock FPR, Stock Fuel pump & 450's, just utilized the Maf-T for fuel trims and a MBC to raise the boost. All the rest was just driving all that I could out of the car. So big props on your quick passes with the 14b, as I know just how hard it is to pull such times from that mighty lil'14b. Who knows whenever I make it back to the states again, I may just get serious with her.

14b Power!

Jose! Awesome to see you here! Hope all is well. 14B still breaking new ground!

Shane, can you get yours back in the running for next year???

Phil

Congrats! You are REALLY close!

Hi Nate!

Haven't talked to you since E-town maybe 5-6 years back?

Pretty amazing stuff going on with the 14b turbo.

Cool to see you up here!

Unfortunately my old project got parted when I decided to put myself through a Police Academy. I needed the money to pay my way through. I never got to run it :( However, by springtime I should be able to pick up another car due to now having a solid job (Michigan Conservation Officer) and it's definately going the way of the 14b! I'm hoping for something I can put in the low 12's this coming year and shoot for catching up to the rest of you in 2010.

Im just getting back into DSM again after taking a break for about 2 years. When I sold DSMotorsport in Jam 07, I fell of the planet till last week. I bought a GVR4 for an everyday car that's somewhat modified (16g and basic stuff).

My yellow 1g I sold last spring, so no 14b record chasing for me. Sucks, I didn't get to run it really hard with a non blown up motor & 14b. That 11.44 I ran it pushed out like a gallon of water, the next run the car fell on it's face in 3rd gear from losing 2 cyl entirely. But then again, that was a junkyard motor, with a junkyard cyl head that sat outside on the ground in the rain for months...couldn't fit any machine work into the GRM $2004 budget, so I sanded off the corrosion on the deck surface by hand and bolted it on with a stock HG. That 11.44 was literally done on a $2004 budget car then adding my good race wheels/tires. HG leaked and it pushed coolant from day 1.

I put a built motor in it, took off the nitrous and put a stock sidemount on it to race in Stock Appearing class at the shootout. Got it together couple days before leaving for ohio. Ran an 11.9 @ 111 with a 1.501 in friday night T&T at norwalk, then lost the Telt on saturday morning driving it from hotel to BR's shop for the saturday hangout. (crank pully bolt was loose and it broke the key on the crank). For some reason I never put it back together with a 14b after that. 2005 season was all about trying to run a 9. (failed)

So....good luck to you 14b guys, you'll have no challenge from me. Sounds like my nitrous/14b record will be beat by a turbo only run anyway. My 11.9 @ 111 is WAY off the power you guys are making.

Even if it does get beat which is probable, think about how long your number has been where it is, and as of now you still have the quick ET for 14b/AWD platform.

It took Shepherd almost 2 years to join Sean at Extreme in the 8's, and he was no longer running the talon after that it was the Hyundai RWD.

I heard about your 11.9 at Norwalk on Friday night.......you still have me beat off the bottle as well!

Phil

thats crazy to run an 11.514 on a 14b great job keep it up:thumb:

Thanks everyone!
To answer all the questions;
I was using Sunoco 116 octane gas. Tires are BFG drag radials, size 225/50x15.
The car weighs 2640 without me in it. 2810 with me in it. I didn't exactly 'decide' on a 1.6 head, I just called around when I needed a new head and that's what I got. I did some dremeling on it to make it better. I guess it's working well. I didn't see any knock pockmarks in the combustion chamber when I had the head off a few months ago, so I kept it.

He already answered that question in this post

sorry to jack the thread but why not a 2.0 head

To expand on my original answer, I kept the 1.6 head because it raises compression slightly and adds a little quench area on the sides of the combustion chamber. The combustion chambers need a little smoothing to work right, so it's not a true bolt-on head if you want it to work at it's best. Anyone with a Dremel, sanding wheel, and a little skill can make it work.
