I had an oil leak so i replaced the rear main seal and it's still leaking. It's leaking from somewhere in the back and is smoking off of the exhaust. It only leaks when the car is running. I checked the oil today and it had some white goopy junk in it. Does anyone think they know where its leaking and what the white junk is

White snot looking stuff in your oil is COOLANT! Usually coolant in your oil is a blown or leaking head gasket (or a cracked head.) Most likely it's seeping through the gasket, unless you over heated it a lot lately. As far as the rear main goes, i'm betting that you have a little groove in it that is keeping the rear main from sealing properly. There is a repair sleeve available that is a super thin piece of metal that slips over the rear snout of the crank, and your rear main seal will now run on that, instead of your old worn out crank snout.

White goopy stuff could be coming from a torn boot on your axle. I had one tear open and it would spray that stuff all over the back of my engine and firewall. I would get under the car and check your axles also while under there check the seal where the axle goes into the transmission. I once made the mistake of thinking my rear main seal went out when it was really my passenger side axle seal. Easy fix and the seal is like $15 at the dealership.

Ummmm, he said he white goopy stuff was IN his oil. I don't think that would be from a leaking output seal. However, I do agree on the tranny seal could be mistaken for a rear main seal. If all you are looking at is the leak on the ground. However, if you are getting oil around your clutch assembly, then I would point that to a rear main seal.

That white goopy stuff is what ethylene glycol looks like after it mixes with oil and goes through the oil pump. The only 2 causes for this are a blown head gasket OR a cracked head. I guess it could also be a cracked block, but an aluminum head is more likely to crack than a steel block.

yes all i'm looking at is the puddle on the ground. would a coolant leak into the oil cause it to overheat because it doesn't. How long could i put off changing the head gasket before it does any damage.

I would seriously just take a half day off and do a quick head gasket change on it. You really dont want to ever wait on big issues like that. Its like driving with a flat tire the damage is already done but the longer you wait the more damage will occur. Good luck to you:D

;)Couldn't have said it better myself.

I'll change my HG here soon but i'm not driving it for now. As far as the crank snout issue goes it's gonna have to wait becuase i really don't feel like going through that again. Last time i ended up having to pull the engine out

ok so i changed the head gasket and all is good. but its still leaking oil so does anyone know where i can get the crank snout and where exactly does it go?

i dont know if it matters but it doesnt smoke until the oil gets on the cat. you can't see oil anywhere else on the exhaust
