ive got a 94 eclipse, 1.8L 1g....n/t...and... so appearently....my friends dad told me i have a main bearing seal leak...which is bad..im leaking oil all the time...buying it almost every 2 or 3 days...now.i. know i have a few options...with either pulling the whole engine out...and replacing the seal..which ive heard would cost round 900$....then ive got a friend who said he could get me a bigger, better engine for nly $500...do i have any other options, what would b the best for me to do?..money's not really a big factor...so yeah..any help would be appreciated...

Do you know where you are leaking oil? What seal are you talking about? There might be other solutions if you let us know what's going on, or figure out for yourself first.

What "bigger, better engine"? I've scant heard of any n/t guys putting in a different motor... and that's for a reason.

right now..ive got the 1.8L non turbo...4 cylinder...yeah...sh*t..i know...umm..hes getting me a 2.0L...cna tmember if he said if it had turbo or not...umm...i think...and pretty much have confirmed, that the oil leak...is coming from where the transaxle connects to the engine...idk if thats what its called exactly...but if you're standing looking at the engine...the leak is on the underside, not the head gasket seal, on the "passenger side of the motor"...but yeah..umm...if i can offer any more info about it...just let me know...thanx tho...

Rear main oil seal. I think its 10-15bucks from the dealership.(just for the gasket). All you have to do is drop the transmission. It's not that difficult of a job, and can be done within a day if your taking it easy.
I see them go all to much.

Good Luck!

And be careful driving with it leaking, it could suddenly loose an immense amount, and potentially destroy your engine.

yeah...the leak isnt like..super bad..i put in some "CD2" stuff into the oil, to expand the seals...it worked pretty good compared to how it was leaking, but yeah, i know the seal itself is cheap, its the either taking the engine out, or dropping the front end thats the expensive part, how much r we talking here?..would it be better for me to just get the 2.0 from my friend, with a brand new ECU and wiring harness?

If you want to do the 2.0 swap you can but your going to need more then just the engine..
If you can't do it, or don't know a friend that can help you out, it'll probably run you 300-500 for the average shop. But it's really not that hard to drop the transmission..

well..the thing is...the friend im talking about...says hes got his mitsubishi mechanics license for about 3 years now...hes got all of the tools, and everything he says...so i mean...i know he can do it, he replaced all of his, hes had about 3 eclipses now, and now..hes riding in an acura rsx type-s...so yeah..he knows what hes doing....im just wondering what would b a better bet, same engine, fix the prob, mod it....or bigger engine, dont worry bout the prob anymore, and mod that?..what would b a better deal...?

Oh Really?
haha

If your buddy is a mitsu mechanic, he should be able to knock it out in half a day, for a very reasonable price.
It depends on the condition of the rest of the engine and the one you would be receiving.
Personally, I would keep the 1.8l if it was economic too. Just because it get's great gas mileage. Then I'd look into getting an AWD..
But I might be spoiled.. hah

Good Luck!

wll..yeah..gas mileage=tru...but the engines got 179,856 miles on it...wow..i know...but yeah..i know he could get me a cheaper price, which is good, so i save the $$...but i dont know if it would b as good a quality as a pro shop type deal...the thing is..i like the 1.8, but i wouldnt mind the extra power of the 2.0...but umm..other than that...the rest of the engine is in ok condition i guess, no leaks, or any of that, ill post pics as soon as i can, so u can see what im talking about with all of this...but yeah..thanx for all the help...when i said "hes riding in an acura rsx type-s...so yeah..he knows what hes doing..."..i didnt mean he knows what hes talking bout ### of the rsx, the...so yeah he knows what hes doing part was supposed to go after the mechanic part..LOL...sry...but yeah..thanx again for all the help...ill do what i can, then post again to let u all know the final outcome...like i said..pics are on the way

i say sell it and buy a real dsm, the 1.8s are a waste of time if you want more than just a grocery getter.

And dropping the tranny should only take a couple hrs for your friend.
I think if that seal leaks too it can result to clutch slippage if it gets too oily.

thanx...yeah..im just getting the 2.0L dohc, 4g63, its got 165hp at the crank and 145 at the wheels...my friend said when hes done upgrading it i'll have about 185hp crank and 170 wheels...so im going with that option, im also getting a new ECU and wiring harness...any suggestions for like...brands or anything?
