first off, i know its annoting when the new kid comes in and just starts asking questions, i was HUGE into the mkiii supra's for a long time and it seems all forums have the same people in them. so i read, found what i could searching, and still have questions.. story goes... i just picked up a 96 gsx. odo is reading 190k, have no idea if thats on the motor or 7 blocks ago, so first thing first... rebuild. the car cranks, but the cams aren't turning, belt is tight and the kid said the crank teeth are stripped... how does a belt strip metal teeth? i read about some crank walk, kinda concerned about that.. any tells i can look for when i tear it down to see if it has a problem? then somethin about bearings i didnt really get at the time(fresh off a 20 hr shift). plan on getting rid of the balance shaft abortion rig.. besides that any tips of what this thing could be telling me as i peak inside?
second, my last supra was "lightly" modded to 306 at the rear wheels. never ran a 1/4, but that is about the speed i'm looking for again. weight between the two doesn't seem too far off, so i'm lookin for around 300 at the wheels. im thinkin 255 wahl, 550cc, 16g, it has a fmic and hard pipes already, i can't remember an acronym about tuning to save my life(been about 5 years), so i'll need 2 aprfch's 1 afcr-wt and of course blinker fluid to keep everything cool. i would rather go a little over and make it reliable, than hit the goal and be fixing stuff every week.
ps. i'm a mechanic in a machine shop, lot of fab experiance, unlimited machines to play with..
sorry i'm new and ignorant to dsm's, i know this isn't staples but i have questions, do you have answers?

Welcome to the dsm scene. I think your goal is very reasonable and the parts for it is good except for the 550 injectors, they will be maxed out fairly quickly, I would go with something like 660's or even more if you plan on tuning with dsmlink.

I honestly don't know what that kid was talking about. You may be needing to replace some head parts as well when you do the rebuild.

You would check the crank for lateral play and see if it's within spec. If you are tearing it apart, you'll have a better idea of what has been done. Obviously you'll want to do new bearings and all and would suggest a new crank if the current one needs turned. Do a full clean and check all the oil passages/journals for blockage.

This is what would start to cross the line of "bench racing". I can give you a link to see what people have run and see what their build is. Research the parts used and why they use them and you'll have your answers :thumb:

Very wise choice on parts ROFL. Seriously though, do all of the maintence first before upgrading unless the said part in question can be upgraded. Reliable is better than power for 1 day a week or longer.

That was easy:p

As far as the cams not turning,, i may have a reason. Sometimes the bolts that hold the cam to the cam gear will loosen up. When this happens the dowel pin that comes out of the cam and goes into the gear will vibrate at eat at the metal untill the cam gear will turn but the cam wont. When you crank the motor are you seeing the belt move and the gears turn or not? I have never heard of a crank pulley shearing off all its teeth. Another possibility is the timing belt is shot and it has a spot in it where all its teeth are gone. In that case the crank would rotate but the belt wouldnt. Just keep your fingers crossed that the timing isnt way off and when you cranked the motor over it bent all your valves.

Honestly with these motors you can crank out 400 hp with basically bolt ons and the correct tuning.

As far as reliability goes. These cars hold up great with proper care but are extremely tempermental, so be ready to be under the hood tweaking quite a bit. The DSM is the problem child of the car world but you gotta love em!!!:thumb:

hey thanks you guys, that dyno sheet page was WAY helpful. tomorrow night is obviously not going to be spent working on the car :hellyeah: but i will post some pics and probably a lot more questions as i do this, want to try and have it done in 3-4 weeks so.... oh boy.
but for now, thanks for the welcome, and the help. much appreciated.

dont forget the boost juice. you will need at least 2 big bottles to run enough boost to reach your horse power level. seriously sounds like you have some work on your hands cant wait to see some pics and progress

haha, i sent someone to autozone last week to get me some windshield wipers and a new kanooter valve for one of the fleet trucks.. had our purchasing guy make a PO for it and everything. gave him a story about how its a hard to find part of the intake that not many people know needs to be replaced. oh man, the whole shop was crackin up. he was pissed when he came back an hour later, i guess he argued with the guy for like 30 minutes telling him he didn't know what he was talking about. wish i had that on you tube..
as far as the project goes, got her in the garage and started getting into it. the timing belt is not turning at all, however the crank is turning over. the kid i got it from said they cranked it a lot(luckily when i took the valve cover off, none of the valves are on the lobes, woo hoo!!!). so i cranked it a turn or 2 to see for myself and yup, no turny turny. unfortunately, who ever has worked on this thing was a half educated hack. wires all over, seems like half the bolts are missing to random stuff. nice fmic and hard pipes though. i was contemplating fixing it up just to run how it is, but my right foot talked me back into the original plan. probably have the motor out next week. lookin through the spark plug holes, didn't see anything terrible so we might be ooooook.
tune in next time, for the adventures of the polock vs. the dsm

That would have been some funny shit to see. ROFLROFLROFL

Why would the valves be on the lobes or are you used to having pushrods?

Sounds like most used DSMs that are rescued.

Just do a leak down and compression test to be sure if you don't want to pull the head. Sounds like you are going to tear it all apart though.
adventures of the polock vs. the dsm
I see you found my blog as well LOL:applause:

as far as the valve-lobe thing, simply stating that whenever the problem, it ended up where no valves are going to be hit by the pistons...
as far as your blog, i dont know what you're talking about... but originally from north east ohio and im guessing you know what im talking about.. polocks take "everything that can go wrong, will go wrong" to a whole new level! :)

Yeah, read my blog, everything that can go wrong has gone wrong haha. I'm Sicilian and Polish.

Ohh, my 666th post :hellyeah::hellyeah:

great, thats all i need... not only now do i have the polish luck, but you're going to curse me with the 666 post. i'll be up and runnin in 2015 now.. takin a break from the tear down, gonna post some pics in a new thread... check it out, i have some questions... i'll title it "the polish project"

toss a belt on it turn it over and check your compression. i hate to say it but its almost a guarantee you have bent valves. i hope you dont ive been down that road to many times
