Im in the middle of a rebuild and am getting low on cash. Came to wondering if I could just get new oil pump gears for the front cover since the cover itself is still in pretty good condition and would save me lots of money. I mean isnt that the purpose of getting a new front cover for anyways? To replace the oil pump gears? Or how important is it to get a whole new cover other than just getting the gears? Thanx for the input.

Anybody? I'm rebuilding my motor and was wondering the same thing. Mitsubishi does sell just the gears but is there any benefit to doing the whole front cover?

Old post back to life here. However I am in the middle of a rebuild as well, and would like to save a couple of bucks. My cover looks good, I know everybody says replace the "front cover," is just replacing the gears good enough or not? Thanks Guys.

I now run an old pump with new gears and oil pressure is the same as it was with the new pump.

have you ever looked at the factory service manual. There are checks to do to the oil pump gears to housing clearance. As well as checking the case journals where the gears ride. If it checks out OK against the specs then ofcoarse its re-usable and should last along time properly installed and maintained

If oil pressure was fine before, don't touch anything. JNZ recommended against just putting new gears in the case because if you need new gears in the first place, something else is most likely worned down.

Thanks man, thats going to help me out. :thumb:

i think it is topline that makes a front cover with oil pump that wasnt too expensive.

Me I'd just open the oil pump and measure the clearances. its just a couple of dumb old iron gears in an aluminum case.

what does dsms say about the topline case?

i know for a fact slowboy uses them in their built dsm's and they've never had a problem with them.

I agree entirely, i just finished building a friend's motor and he wanted to get a topline rebuild kit. Anyways long story short, all i did was pre-lube the pump and install it and we've had absolutely no problems with it and oil pressure is perfect. I took a look vs the Mitsubishi front cover i see no reason why i wouldn't use the Topline one on my car as well.

im auto, so i know i wont be revving past where my TC sets me up, unless im manual shifting, then maybe MAYBE 6 grand. i baby this car, and will continue to until i make the manual swap. . . or keep this as a DD and get a manual for a street/drag car.

What are you guys revving too? I know ds has said they don't like high rpms.

I can tell you he's reved his motor to the 7 grand mark on several occasions and the pressure is just as good as my Mitsu Oil pump at that level. How long it lasts is still up in the air, as his motor is relatively fresh... However if something happens i'll make sure to give you guys info. So far so good, however.

1) Oil Pressure is created by the gears and their tolenrances between each other and them and the case. If you're going to be re-using the case, at least make sure that you check these tolerances, and look for wear on the faces of the gears, where they ride on the facing of the cover, and the shafts on the gears and the casing where they ride.

2) Topline....dunno how many times this subject needs to be addressed, or how many people have to have them fail in order to get the idea. *YES* some people have ran them without issues, but do a little search and see how many people HAVE had them fail. Then again, it's only your motor riding on it.

I purchased a Topline pump a long while ago, and looked it over. "If they're cheaper, why not carry them?". And according to a lot of people who sell them on Ebay, etc., they're "From the same manufacturer as the OEM ones". So I got it, and after looking it over, ended up getting rid of it. I can get these pumps cheap as dirt, and could make more money selling someone a Topline pump than an OEM Mitsu one. I guess I just have an issue trying to sell people something that I wouldn't trust on my own car. :toobad:

I'd love to hear these people explain how two cases that are supposedly come from the same manufacturer are obviously (plain as day) cast in two different molds.

I know of a lot of manufacturing businesses that cast multiple sets of molds for the production of the same product.

We offer both for the very reason that everyone has an opinion. I will also back the statement that we have had good luck with the topline covers.

As far as “get new gears or a front cover”. I would say depends on if you are a “Cragger” or an “engine builder/machinist/overly thorough type”. I put a new front cover on because I’m a bit reckless and that’s why I only wrench on my own parts. Take for instance, Marko that works here, he’ll inspect a part for hours and check it for tolerances/cracks/warped surfaces etc. and things always work out for him because of being thorough. I use new parts because i HATE putting something back together and then finding it's warped, cracked, won't make pressure etc...

That is how I would base my decision fella’s.
