I have a 90 talon tsi. i am wondering if i should rebuild my motor or invest in a new one.

The problems:
I had a radiator hose come off and it was about half full of oil. I havent checked the oil pan yet. I have about 50% compression in the 3rd cylinder. It also wont idle correctly, it will just die or rev up high and die.

Any help would be appreciated. Oh the car is bone stock, and got all the timing redone less than 20 miles ago.

ya youll pretty much never get a hold of a 'new' motor.. just a rebuilt bottom and top end with replacement parts..

a shop cleaned, bored, painted and assembled my block for 450$ internals range depending on what you want to do. slowboy has a rebuilt kit for 500$ http://www.slowboyracing.com/shop.php?sid=&cat=47

so a grand will rebuild your bottom end, tack on 170$ for oil pump, 50$ water pump..etc..

my point is that you can add up what it would be to do it yourself, and compare it to one already built.

you can get a stock rebuilt engine for like 1500 here.. if it were me.. i would get this:

just to give you an idea.. its cost me over 4 grand and almost a year to rebuild mine myself when i could have got the 1500 engine and been done..

Yep my mechanic built mine for $1000. That inluded used 1g rods and 2g pistons I provided. This uncluded the entire bottom end uncluding machining block, pistons, rods to fit pistons, crank, rings, bearings. Also this uncluded a oil pump, water pump and front facing oilfilter bracket since my stock oil cooler on was trashed. So if you find a good mechanic it can be done at a good price. My mechanic could have built me a 2.3 stroker for $2000 but I was short on cash. Thats with wiseco pistons, eagle rods and a stroker crank. You can think about going this way if you have the money. Most places charge about 2500 for this set up and if you think about it, its a cheap setup for something that can handle 600+whp.

yea its just about 2k, thats what i just built.. 7 bolt stroker 1500 internals and 500$ in block work

I can do the work. Minus the machine work of course. I was thinking of just getting my bottom end rebuilt to start with. I didnt know if i should use the block i already have or find another one. I have already tried to replace the piston rings. What do i need to replace in this motor? Pistons, rods, rod bearings, and rings is there anything else i should replace while i have the motor out?

ya you should try and replace as much as you can... granted there are a lot of components that can be reused with just a replacement of sensors..etc..

definitely a new oil pump, timing stuff which you already said you have.. water pump.., alternator, everything on the front of the engine. thats most of the critical components.. make sure to inspect everything..etc.. youll understand more once you have torn down the engine completely and are at the stage of putting it back together. youll start to replace things left and right.

make sure that if you dont get a rebuild kit that you definitely get a gasket kit. but to be honest the engine is really simple. youre oil pump being the most important, water pump and timing will make up the front. timing kits are 200+, topline oil pump which is what you want to get because i read that mitsubishi actually uses the topline oil pump and jacks up the price.. so thats 175$ water pump about 50$. dont go cheap on the oil pump. get factory or topline.. not some autozone... thats about it.. i JUST finished building mine and cant think of much more 'important' stuff.. you can of course replace a lot more..

oh and you can use your block. to be safe make sure to go like 20 over and of course get it decked.. the block will be as good as new, its a steel tank

I bought a 90s 6 bolt with air oil cooler and been rebuilding it up

and so far Ive bought a new barely used head, new valves,
new water pump, new belts, balance shaft removal, new tensioner,
mls gasket kit, ( Im thinking about the apr head studs)
shaved head, port and matched manifold ports, 14b ported,
all the egr removed, upgraded clutch, new crankshaft, everything
cryotreated, and Im currently shopping for some high compression pistons
but seems I may be running a little short on money because I have to get
it in my car and running before the end of august when school starts back up, (college)
and I still need to buy a new oil
pump and I want to buy a light weight flywheel while the trannys out so I may
end up passing on the pistons and just stick with the stockers...
But thats what Im doing maybe it will help you in your decision, if you do end up
buying a new rebuilt motor like they was telling you, then def get a 6bolt just for a piece of mind.

I would get a 6bolt no matter what. I have been told they are less prone to crank walk. I am wondering if I should make it a 2.3 stroker. What effect does that have on these motors, is it worth it?

Btw how much money have you spent on your rebuild so I have an idea. you seem to be doing something similar to what i want to do.
