Ive read so many threads with mixed reviews on all clutches, most of the bad were probably due to installation errors and or worn clutch parts, or improper break in. I would like some real advice on my choices. My two main choices are spec stage 3 6 puck or the act 2600 with street disc, and the clutchmasters fx 400 6 puck. The one I want to go with is the spec clutch with the 2600 as the safe, proven thing to go with. The clutchmasters is sort of on the back burner as I havent read too much on it.

To make this short, which clutch would you reccomend to go with for a 92 awd (the 6 puck seems to have good driveability from what I have read so dont mention that) The use of the car is a dd/weekend warrior. It will be used for drag, auto-x and road racing.

My friend used to have a mustang that we put a spec clutch in and it worked great in his car. His car had drag radials on it and probably made around 150hp/150tq more than stock. The clucth pedal felt lighter than stock to me. I know it isn't a dsm but it gives you an idea about their product.

Have you checked out exedy twin disc? Why a puck clutch? I really don't like my friends act 6 puck compared to my street disc for a daily car.. I've heard a lot of good things about the quarter master and south bend clutches as well might want to check them out.

Its good to hear something good about my inital choice.

did you rule out the centerforce dual friction?

I had a centerforce clutch in my 96 awd and I loved it. I dont know what people complained about, it saw countless drag launches and it took it like a champ. Its in the back of my mind but I sort of want to get something a bit stronger. The pedal pressure felt great with the buffer cylinder removed. Im not sure how it would be in a 1g though.

A twin disc clutch is out of my price range. Ive never driven the puck clutch before but from what I have read, they seem fine for a dd unless they get heated in long term stop and go traffic. What did you think was bad with your buddys clutch? Which vendors carry south bend clutches? Ive seen quarter master but the only one I found was a twin disc.

Thanks for the replies

It's very hard to pick/suggest a combo since they've all had their share of problems. You'll see countless threads about people praising Act/spec/clutchmasters/tcenterforce/etc but then you also see threads where guys post pics of broken Act/spec/clutchmasters/centerforce/etc and nothing but complains.

So just pick one that's within your budget and is able to hold down the tq you're putting down and go from there.

From personal experience I've had good luck with Centerforce Dual Friction but had problems with an ACT2600.

Currently I'm running a Centerforce DFX pressure plate with an ACT street disk and Fidanza flywheel. I love the soft pedal and so far it hasn't slipped at all (running an FP Green 20psi).

Thats exactly what I said in my first post, I think most of the failures are due to installation error or they didnt break them in properly. The cfdf did me alot of good in my 96 awd, I guess that goes to show you shouldnt take everything people say to heart. I was a bit worried about my cfdf when Installed it but after a few thousand miles and drag launches later it was great, no slipping. So I think Im just going to order the spec stage 3 and act flywheel and be done with it. Ill post up a review once I finish break in.

I've also had good luck with CFDF. When I purchased my gvr4 it already had a CFDF installed with about 5k miles on it. According to the seller it was properly broken in.
I drove the car for about 25k miles before I decided to do a full rebuild and when I took out the clutch it was still in great shape. That clutch had plenty of hard launches on it and a lot of abuse but never gave up. The only thing with CFDF that you have to keep in mind is not to get it too hot so you can't launch it hard several times in a row, it needs time to cool off between runs and it will last.
Anyways good luck with your new setup and don't forget to post a review once you get to drive with it for a while.
