So i bought this car from a guy who did nothing but install parts on his gsx for 11 years in his garage. During his ownership the car drove 3000 miles, so i can only assume that this clutch is basically new.
Enter me, i buy it from him and drive it home. By the time i got on the highway i began to realize it needed a new clutch terribly. But i still drove it around town a few days before winter so i could get to know the car.
When in 1st and almost all the way through 2nd the car will grip and put you in your seat, but as soon as i hit 3rd or any other gears the car will slip and will rev to redline, but as long as i dont go above partial throttle it wont glaze. But in first i have it set at 10psi and has no problems. Weird, so i just parked it assuming some huge clutch problem, tonight after work i tore it down and found... a perfect clutch and basically good flywheel...

Its some valeo clutch, and an alum flywheel.
What do you guys think the issue is? Just too cheap of a clutch? My clutch line is the Epsi ss line, no obvious clutch pedal feeling wrong, my master cylinder rod has the proper spec. Dont really know what to chase here. I bought an sbc clutch to replace this with, but since this clutch is still so nice im hesitant to try install a $600 clutch..

What does the PP look like, full face and fingers-wise. Have you checked the flywheel step? Sounds like insufficient clamping force, but there may be other factors in play.

Valeo is a worldwide OEM clutch supplier....sounds like the clutch is indeed new, it just doesn't have enough holding power. After the clutch slips once and gets glazed, you're basically screwed.

New clutch with a stronger pressure plate will cure the problem.

What Southbend Clutch did you get? Just FYI they don't recommend alum flywheels like that with their clutches. Or if you do, to be pretty precautious.

Thank you, i figured it was just a crappy generic clutch problem.

And i read into how the kevlar sbc clutches work with alumnium flywheels, the cons didnt merit me spending another 500 or so to replace a new flywheel. The car is not a dragster, i just road course it, if heat becomes an issues ill just kick myself in the rear when i get to that bump.

And the flywheel is at the machine shop now being measured for warp and step. Ill know on monday.

I can also say once you slip a clutch hard it is bout toast i ran a stock clutch to the point were it was slipping under boost pulled it out and it still looked great threw a act 2600 in and no problems. Just because the clutch looks good does not mean it will hold the power the car is putting down might just be to much power for it.

^ Not exactly $500...and if your aluminum flywheel is in good shape (I can't tell anything from the photos), it's worth $100 or so in good used condition so upgrading to the correct flywheel for the clutch you want to use wouldn't cost you much at all. Do it once and do it right.

That's a basically fubar'd flywheel! That friction surface on it is in horrible shape, and thats the cause of your slipping clutch. Also that is the type with a removeable/replaceable friction surface. So you can not machine it. You have to order a replacement insert if you wish to continue using it.
