I know we are dsm owners and not neon owners, but I figured I would post it here since it's the same motor. Anyways, the motor shakes really bad so I was wondering what to diagnose. There is a cel that I haven't gotten around to yet. I'm looking at the neon on fri to see if I can figure out whats up. What do you guys think? Could it be motor mounts, misfires, timing? Any help would be appreciated.

I know from being neons.org forums its an inherit prob with neons. Might want to fill in your motor mounts with windo weld if your on a budget or buy inserts should solve it. If not might be an out of balance wheel, check your lugs torque down to spec, alignment issues.HOpe this helps

Is there a way I can check the condition of the mounts without removing them?

You need to get the CEL. It could be a variety of things. Spark or injector code who knows.

Yeah the first thing I'm doing on fri is pulling the code and changing the plugs. It's not my car so I can only work on it at schedualed times.

its not an inherent problem in neons....sounds like either a bad motor mount(all motor mounts tend to fall apart after awhile) or a misfire which will cause bad engine bucking sometimes, and for your information the 420A is not a neon engine...the block is the same, but thats all, the DOHC neon engine code is D4RE, and the SOHC is S4RE, the head is different on the neon, and the camshafts are more aggresive in the neon as well
