i have a 1990 plymouth laser and was told it wont pass smog .. i just bought it and found that the turbo seems to be leaking some oil into the manifold ... i dont plan on keeping this turbo for any length of time ... i just need to pass smog .. what should i do ? rebuild this one .. or is there a different "upgraded" one i can get and still pass smog ?

a bad turbo w/ cracked hosuing or cracked manifold can cause smog issues, usually check the EGR, solenoids and make sure your cat is still working, when i had my old 14B on there it fail pretty bad, after i installed a 16g, it barely passed, but i have 200k miles on my 90 GST, the cat's probably dead by now...

make sure all the vacuum hoses are in good shape, make sure your timing is dead on, and your idle is stable,

oh yeah, is your dsm pretty stock? if you have a boost gauge, you can see if you're hitting full boost, 1g should be 14psi w/ the 14B, my cracked turbo wasn't able to hit full boost, so that's another place to look,

i was pretty much wondering what my options were with the turbo .. i am replacing the bottom end and had a new headgasket installed and most of the gaskets are new ... but if the turbo is leaking oil outthe exhaust side i heard it wouldnt pass emissions ... i found oil leaking otu of my intake side for sure .. soo i was wondering if like a 16g would pass smog or am i better off going and rebuilding my 14b .. all i need to do is get it past smog once ...

i have a 16g and i passed smog, so as long as your engine is running good, doesn't matter what turbo, cuz at idle and 2500rpm, there's no boost, it doesn't matter what turbo you have, rebuilding the 14B's gonna be a PITA cuz there's no parts for it, and hard to find old parts in good shape,

The turbo doesn't come into play at all for an AWD vehicle, seeing as they cannot Dyno us in CA. It is a stationary sniffer test. They will check your ECU to make sure there are no flags (I am currently having a problem with my ECU not having ANY smog related protocols ready.)

However, your oil leak WILL cause you to fail. I would look into either a replacement 14B, or a 16G.

soo is it save to run a 16g with all my stock injectors and fuel pump as long as im not boosting on it ... ie. stock boost controller and stuff ???
