Ok so here the situation, im in the market for a new GSX. I found a really clean 97 with a 6 bolt motor swap. But the thing is that he removed the ERG system completely. I would like to avoid the hassle of under the table smog, which i did for 3 years on my old GSX. Know that i have a guy who doesnt care about visual, but if i were to put back the whole stock exhaust system, with cat and what not. With a very simple tune, not trying to make power. Would i be able to pass smog?

It depends on what kind of tests they do. If they vacuum check your EGR, you'll obviously fail. Maybe you'll fall under the NOx limit somehow if all the other emission related equipment is installed. I'm going to guess CA is very strict, so "cheating" won't be easy.

You could probably just pick up a new EGR canister and reinstall the vac lines on the cheap though.

No. You would at least need to have the EGR solenoid plugged into the wire harness. You could also get a plug fouler or build an o2 simulator for the rear o2, and just tack weld some cat heatshields on your exhaust and not worry about buying a new cat.

Errr, i thought this would be the situation.. how hard would it be to install "needed" ERG parts. Also would it be better to get it from a 95-96 model since they are located under the battery or the 97-99 which are under the left headlight. Im just trying to have fun without trouble blast CALI!!! laws.

Reinstalling EGR equipment is pretty straight forward. Remove the battery and the EGR canister is right there. It's just two bolts. Reinstall vac lines, etc.

Finding one might a little hard. Any junkyard that's got a 2g will likely have its EGR. It's not a popular item. Or you could Google search one. Not sure of prices though.

If you're buying this car, could you ask the guy how he's passed smog in the past?

yeah the canister in under the battery for 95-96 models, would i have any problem using one of those in a 97? since they are located under the headlight in those years. I pretty sure he passed it the same way i use to pass mine. at triple the price!

On my old 90, I passed without the EGR (cyclone manifold installed) functioning, it was installed but cyclone IM has no provisions for it. This was also on a "test only" smog center.

On my old 98, I passed without the charcoal canister (FMIC installed) since it got in the way of FMIC piping. So if you're asking will it pass the sniff test without those, I can tell you it can be done.

But if you are going to the trouble of installing it, might as well make it functional, they actually don't decrease performance (minus the weight savings of course).

Yo, OP. Learn the what the acronyms stand for and use the right one and put the letters in the right order, OK? You seem to be looking for an EVAP system, not EGR.

Thanks for clearing that up, if i do put it back it i plan on making it functional as well. I was just wondering would system would be easier to install? 95-96 or the 97-99
