alright i finally have enough money to turbo my non turbo. I have 106,000 miles on my engine now but I dont want to just drop a turbo in it and blow it up, i want to swap to a 5 speed too. This is my dd so im not going to be able to rip it apart. I found a spare engine and trans for 150 and i would rebuild and boost that engine and then drop it in when its done, i need some ideas or opinions if this would be worth buying the spare engine and boosting it or if there are any other routes I could take?

If your set on turboing your N/T the best way would be to build a spare motor, that way your not out a vehicle and can just swap the new motor and kit in.

It will be cheaper and provide better results building a 4g, but if your attached to your 420A thats the way i would do it.

I boosted a 420 in my first eclipse. it was a bone stock rebuilt motor with about 20,000. i did everything the right way with a t4 on 8psi daily driven. it made 229hp and 230ft.lbs. when i dynoed it on 5 psi. it was fun for almost a whole year untill it started making bad noises. pulled it apart and found almost every ring land on every piston was craked. imo buy a new eclipse with a 4g63 and play with that. thats what i did, ill never do anything with a 420a again. but if you are dead set on using one, build the bottom end. the aftermarket is nothing like a 4g63's and it has no where as much potential.

I had a hahn(i know everbody hates hrc but this was 1999 & there werent alot of options) stage 2 on a 1998 neon rt with about 30k on it and it lasted 3 years and over 40k miles put on it at 10psi. Is the 420a ideal, no. can it work, I would say yes. Thats just my own experience for what its worth.

so what generally goes wrong with turboing it then? couldnt i just get some stronger piston rings and keep it well maintained?

IT has nothing to do with the piston rings. IT's all about where they are placed in the piston. The higher they are the less material at the top of the piston between the top of the piston and rings. It's a real good idea to run forged internals with a turbo 420a.

find a factory 4g63...but if u cant..u CAN use the 420a motor..with good tuning u can make decent hp (225-300) depending on boost..remember this....tuning is 80% at least of your power potetial...forged bottom end...good head...16g turbo...fuel pump..injectors..some type of tuning and u will be pleased...if not...spend more money!

You can usually get really good deals on turbo 2Gs on Craigslist. The price will be about the same as a built motor and trans...maybe even less.

For $4400 "a friend of mine" got a 95GSX with a JE/Scat 2.4L, T3/To4E 50trim, FMIC, 1000cc injectors, full coilover suspension, etc. :hellyeah:

This really depends on how much money you are willing to spend, as it does in any case. You can build a setup yourself for cheap, or you can purchase a Hahn kit like many people on here have probably done. I didn't get any of my parts for free, and was able to build my setup for around $2k total (tuning and all). You have to be resourceful and recognize which parts actually matter. How much power do you want to make?

While your plan does make sense, let me propose one thing.

You can spend all this money on forged internals and turbo components for your 420A.

Or.

You can buy a factory turbo car for a little more money, a 16g, a front mount, wideband, and a tune, and get the same results without any of the hassle.

Just something to think about.
