Okay so I'm sure a few of you have seen my build thread by now. I've come to a halt in the build because the valve stem seals on my head are shot. And I mean completely shot. Its pissing oil out the exhaust ports like no one's business. So I've decided to pull the reman head off my parts car and throw new seals in it for good measure and put it on my car. The head looks to be brand new and has a reman stamp on the front of the head. That car ran good with no cooling issues or oil issues. So my question is what all should I replace while I have the head off? I'm planning on the $95 ARP head studs and a standard felpro head gasket set from extremepsi.com From what I've read, that should be plenty for my goals down the road. I plan on running a 20g on pump gas in the future but for now, I have a 16g. Should I replace the timing belt components? I know this would usually be a no brainer, but I'm asking because I know the timing comments were replaced before I bought the car. The history is that the previous owner - a good friend of mine - replaced the head gasket and timing components before he parked it with a bad turbo. It sat for 4 or 5 years and then I bought it. So the timing components are 6 years old but have virtually no miles on them. Replace or reuse??? Or replace the timing belt and leave alone the tensioner and water pump? Or opt to not be a cheap ass and replace it all while I'm there?

Bare minimum for me would be a new tensioner and belt. I would inspect the pullies though. Waterpump, I would probably reuse, but again, check bearing movement.

Sitting for 5 years is almost worst than being run for 5 years in my mind...

That's kinda how I thought of it too. I'm looking at a Gates timing belt component kit for on extremepsi.com $75.95. Will that suffice? Or I can get the Gates economy complete timing belt kit with the water pump and tensioner for $214.99

Do you think I need to replace the tensioner if it was replaced before being parked? I mean I can get the Gates timing belt component kit for $75 and it comes with the timing belt, balance shaft belt, and new pulleys. Is it necessary to replace the tensioner if it's in good working order? What exactly is there to go wrong with the tensioner?

The tensioner is a hydraulic cylinder, so itll fail just like any other. If the seal inside of it starts to get dry itll leak out and then you will not have proper tension on your timing belt. I mean, you could leave it if you want, but for the $100 it may cost, I've never thought twice about replacing it. Your motor is worth a lot more than that, so to me its cheap insurance.

Ah okay. I wasn't sure if it was a sprung tensioner or hydraulic. Do you think I'd be safe with the Gates kit with the tensioner and water pump included?

I've decided to replace it all. Now my big question is am I safe to use Gates branded parts.
I did lots of research when I did my t-belt 2 months ago and the answer I found is if you are stock, it's fine. If you have any decent mods (like you do) You want OEM everything. A gates belt has worked for some people but they have a much higher fail rate in higher power than stock applications. Be smart and go OEM. Your reman head will thank you for it. You can get away with gates pulleys and maybe pump but the T-belt and tensioner must be OEM.
