Working on a 92 GVR4, first i will let you know that the fuel pressure regulator is not holding pressure to spec, and i have a new one on the way.

The question I have is that when the key is in the On position and the fuel pump should turn on to help build fuel pressure. It never does turn on. Only when you are in the start position does it initially turn on the pump.(so since the fpr is bad and bleeding off the pressure while sitting unused over a period of 5 min, it takes a while cranking over to finally build up enough pressure to start) It is alot of cranking. The really funny part is that was it is started, you turn the key back to the on/run position and the pump continues to run!

i dont understand how the pump can not run in the on position when the car is not running but when the car is running the pump runs in the on position?:banghead:

Really? I could have swore all of my past dsms primed in the on position. ROFL

If this is the true I will be very releived but feel like an idiot. Just waiting to get that fpr in the mail so it will maintain fp so i dont have to crank so much

Thanks

Like Rory said, on our beloved DSMs the fuel pump doesn't turn on until the engine is cranking.

Why would you expect the pump to run under those conditions? You have to crank the engine for the pump to turn on or use the test connector to power it.

They don't prime by turning the ignition on. The MPI relay switches power to the fuel pump either when the starter is activated or the ECU sees CAS pulses and thinks the engine is running.

As for why it is turning on once the engine is hot, I don't know. I know the fuel pressure solenoid (if you still have it) increases fuel pressure on a warm engine. But the pump should not be coming on while the key is in the "on" position.

My 1g requires a lot of cranking as well on a cold start and I have been trying to track down the cause of it because it used to fire right up right away. I replaced the bladder in my AFPR to no avail. I believe that the Walbro 255's have a built in check valve that could possibly be letting off the fuel pressure. Here is my problem: http://www.dsmtuners.com/forums/newbie-forum/274989-trouble-starting-when-cold.html#post152523709, if I figure it out I will let you know. If someone else figures it out, let me know.

When the starter cranks over and the cams begin to turn, it will turn the CAS which is what will start the fuel and ignition components.

The other cars may have had link or some other chip feature to allow the fuel pump to always come on when the ignition is on.

There is a fuel pump test connector under the hood (IIRC) that you can ground to turn the pump on.
