First of all, my car is a 97 spyder gs-t.
My goal is to make it a fun street car that gets decent gas mileage. I have a 3kgt vr-4 for dig races, so the gs-t is more for racing from a roll.

My mods right now are just a K&N open element filter, ssqv running open atmosphere (getting a type-s closed loop soon), a 3" Turbo back straight through exhaust, and: EGT, boost, and A/F gauges, urethane motor mounts, and 190 fp.

With that said, Im going with the most common setup with dsm's. Im planning on getting a Big 16g turbo, fmic, 550's, safc, pocket logger, and ebc (maybe mbs..not sure yet).

And I also don't want to mix in any non-relevant mods, to make it easy to understand. But I also plan in running 235 wide tires...and im undecided on suspension right now.

And do NOT plan on tuning often...I am just too impatient to tune, and not as experienced as I would like.

my questions are:
1. Since I don't want to get really technical with the tuning, should I just go with safc and datalogger? Or just get the dsmlink with eprom?
I really dont want to keep a laptop in my car since it is a convertible. I dont want to get my stuff stolen.

2. I plan on porting everything I can...and want to run at least 20 psi....perferably 23 or more. Will the porting be enough to keep boost creep under control?

3. Will 550's be sufficient for 20+psi? or should i get 660's?

4. Will the Safc and datalogger be all i need to properly tune my car?

5. Should i do the 34mm flapper mod, if i plan on porting everything anyways?

6. Does it really matter what company i get the injectors from? 550's/660's should be the same no matter what company makes them.

7. will 20X9X2.75" be a big enough fmic for this setup?

8. I plan on buying this intercooler kit from ebay: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/95-9...029353282QQrdZ1
do you think the piping will fit pretty good? i dont want to weld some extra piping together to get it to match up right.

9. Will there be much of a difference between the EVO III 16g or big 16g? I just cant justify the pricing for such a small gain.

That's all the questions I can think of right now, and I numbered it for easy answering.

I really don't want to spend that much money on this setup, since im not looking for a full blown race car.
I want to get close to 400hp, but I will still be happy with mid-high 300's.

any other advice or opinions on other things i should get are greatly appreciated :) .

Thanks for any answers guys

I'll take a shot:

If you get a 95 EPROM from FFWD (sponsor of this website) you can also have Jeff at DSMchips.com burn you a custom chip for the injectors you decide to go with, get a stutterbox which allows you to build boost off the line and control your launches better, as well as the ability to possibly run without an AFC since it treats the bigger injectors like stock. My car did fine without it on 550cc injectors, but I could only do 18psi (91 octane)without messing with my S-AFC II or AFPR.

I would recommend going with at least an injector of 650cc to run more than 20psi on the good ole Cali 91 octane as long as you go with a custom chip or DSM Link (which you'll here more about from others I'm sure)

I would also get a logger to monitor things or if you go with DSM Link then it has everything you'll need and won't need an S-AFC.

A 16g can be had for cheap used, but you'll also need some parts to install it on your 2g. You can piece them together by youself or you may want to go with some vendors kits that include the turbo and the install parts. The Evo III 16g gives you room to grow if you decide to go deeper with mods/tunning tools/engine work.

I can't see E-bay ads from where I'm at, but I bought an e-bay intercooler and fabbed up some custom pipes and it works great with my B16g, Hope this helps, good luck modding:)

1. DSM link is the best way to go although it gets a little pricey. So depending on how much you want to spend you should probably just pick up a used safc and a pocketlogger.

2. You shouldnt have any problems with boost creep at those boost levels you plan on running. The higher boost you plan on running the less air that needs to go through the wastegate to keep things under control

3. I would just buy 660s that way you dont have to worry about falling short later on also dont forget to upgrade that fuel pump.

4. A SAFC and a datalogger will get the job done but i would highly recomend also getting a wide band o2 that makes life so much easier.

5. You might as well put a 34mm flapper in while its apart.

6. The injector brand really doesnt matter to much(although some people have different opinions) just stick with a well known name brand.

7. That intercooler will work fine.

8. Be carefull with what you buy off of ebay. The link you posted wont open up so i cant see just what you plan on purchasing, but be carefull as i have had some trouble with ebay stuff. You might be better off just purchasing a fmic kit from a well known dsm distributor.

9. Go with the evo 3 16g it has a couple differences over a standard big 16g. The turbine outlet is 2.5 inches, and i believe the compressor wheel is slightly ligher and larger in diameter.

Hope this helps

just to add, before you go and ask the explanation of what the above poster has answered for you.. you should just do a quick search for related threads. all of your answers could have been easily found through that way :thumb:

I really dont want to keep a laptop in my car since it is a convertible. I dont want to get my stuff stolen.

DSMLink requires no laptol in the car. DSMLink is very, very user friendly. Can take you to the 9.XX 1320s. Is a buy once and never-have-to-upgrade-when-you-get-hungry-for-more option? I should have bought it before even bought my logger (it comes with the best logger, bar none). I plan on running 11s with a FWD.

That being said, you do not need it to control your 550s well. You donot need it to make a quick street car. I say get MAFt not safc as you are venting your bov to the atmosphere and MAFt can be run in blowthru. And is simple to tune and is fine for controlling 550s, too.

the more you boost, the less creep you have. don't boost that high with 550s:nono: . Go to about 20 psi, IMHO. you'll be happy that you can run on people and still drive your car for tens of thousands of miles with out a problem. Or at least get ARP head studs and keep an eye on your knock.

if you get 660s then i think you should go with DSMLink, as you may have troubles with high timing and injector deadtime issues that I had. That will take alot of tuning time for you to eat with a piggyback. It will take the same time to tune 1400cc injectors with a +1000msec deadtime with dsmlink as it would for you to tune 550s on MAFt or SAFC. So this is another attempt at showing you the benefits of DSMLink and user-friendliness.

Yes. w/ 550s this will be easier than 650s in my experience and research.

yes do that and port only if you need to. You'll find that you'll need alot more fuel and alot of intercooler to run 20+ psi. So you're going to probably end up at around 20 psi with a decent tune. You can still get major creep at this boost. Get the bigger flapper and be done with it.:thumb:

With a piggyback, you'll want some injectors with a very small dead time; dead time that is close to stock DSM 450s

yes. Look at water injection as you can use windshield washer fluid (cheap) and fill up a gallon tank at about every fillup. It may not look cool to do. but the gains are measurable enough to make the guys laughing at you shut up in loss or fear you too much to race;)

I can't get the link to work.

What EVO3 and 16g are you looking at?... The prices are very similar from where i'm looking... So the bigger more efficient turbo would be the obvious choice. I think that if your looking at a big 16g then just get a small 16g. It has intense 14b spoolup with flow almost like the big 16g at a better efficiency percentage. I ran a small 16g on the streets for a long time ant it was really, reall fun and fast. Also look at a 50 trim. They flow he!!a air (way more than an evo3) and are super-efficient on pump gas.

BTW. Take a look at my mods. I have really, really agressive cams and 18g and all supporting mods yet i got 33+ mpg on my last tank. and i'm looking at almost 30 on this tank. Good gas milage = not getting on it every time you pull from a light or drive out your driveway. During my tuning phase, i got a best of 14.7 mpg Let the ws6 go on by, and you'll get 350+ miles to a tank for sure. Good gas milage and being the "king of the streets" does not mix.

sorry, I made it unclear....I mean that I want to run AT LEAST 20 psi....as high boost. I wanted to run 10psi as low boost. well the evoIII 16g from sbr is $777 shipped.

But I can get a Big 16g with install kit, $520 shipped.
thats a $250 difference. for a slightly better turbo.

thanks for all the help guys....I have a pretty good idea of what I want now :)
