My stock shifter knob has a tear in the leather and its getting bigger by the day. I would like to get a clean looking aluminum or leather shifter knob to replace it but all I can seem to find is the type that has the 3 set screws and the little cover that screws over them to make it look clean. The problem with those for me is they dont sit all the way down to the boot.

So here is my question to everyone, does anyone have or know where I can get a shifter knob that screws on to the stock thread or that will sit all the way down on the boot.
Any and all suggestions and pictures will be greatly appreciated. Oh ya the car is 5 speed.

Thanks,
Ben :thumb:

why not just use that one that you bought already that didn't come all the way down, take off the shift boot, put on the knob, mark about 3/8s down from it on the shifter, wrap some ducttape or electric tape around that line you put on thats 3/8s down from the knob, take off the knob, put back on the shift boot, put back on knob... NO MORE SAG!

My shifter boot is not sagging, it looks right with the stock shifter knob on, but the style of knobs like I described above cannot be put on all the way due to the mounting style. The beauty ring or whatever you want to call it that covers the set screws must go on first then you place the knob on. Once it is on as far as you can get it you tighten the set screws and screw the beauty ring over those screws and now there is a gap between the bottom of the shift knob and the boot.

yes, and if you do what i said, it will move up the top of your stock shift boot so it will look good with that style knob, its what alot of people do. see there is a little plastic ring in your shift boot that tells it where to sit on the shifter, now if you put the tape on the shifter and make a bulge with the tape higher up on the shifter, that ring inside the shiftboot will be higher, making your stock shiftboot stop higher, ending the gap between beauty ring and boot.

I also need a new shift knob, I want one similar to the stock knob. I have a 97 gsx...any suggestions on websites or brands?

The 1g donkey dick is so underated, it provides the perfect amount of leverage for shifting and allows for a firm grip... And you'll win tons of style points with it....

i know what ya mean about not sticking down all the way, took about 30-45min to fix that problem, but i took the plastic incerts drilled the center out till on the first one till it fit farther on the shifter stick. then take the other incerts and do the same thing. its a pain in the ass but it works you still end up with about a 1/4 of a gap but it sits lower. oh and you have to tighten it up everyso often though. you end up useing two incerts. hope this helps

Here's a pic of mine. I'm using the shift knob off of a 2.5 RS with a boot from redline goods.

Similar to what IceDragon was talking about, last weekend I put a rubberband under the top of the boot to hold it against the bottom of the shift knob. Unfortunately the knob has a larger diameter thread than DSMs, but with a little massaging you can get it to stay put real well ;)

I have mine done w/ grey stitching, so I think it looks nice.

That's one hell of a peel your dash has going on. OMG

Thanks, I know, it is already fixed. Swapping a black dash in to replace the grey one over winter.
It once was small, but over the years friends would get in and say your dash is peeling, and lift on it

the fitment on redline products is excelent, and the quality seems to be right up there.

I was actually the guinnea pig for the 1G DSM. My shift boot fitment is off by a little bit. I may order a new one eventually.

Thanks for all the suggestions, I think that I am going to go with the Greddy.

is the greddy a thread on cuz i too am looking for a knob...but i REFUSE to use set screw knobs cuz they like to move sometimes...bad news in a race....if not anyone know someplace that sells THREAD ON knobs

I have a Razo. It screws on and goes all the way to the boot.
