Need help trying to remove a push to start. The push to start was connected directly to the battery to the starter motor. When you turn the key, you had to engage the push to start button. I removed the wiring from the battery to the starter and reconnected the factory connector. Now, when turning the key, power does not get to the starter motor. Need help figuring what else goes into inserting a push to start.

Assuming something else has to be disabled in order for the push to start to work .

I'd think that the previous owner might have put it in for the same reason I did. My ignition switch worked fine for ON and ACC, but for START it was not working about half the time. I had already bypassed the starter relay with a jumper wire, and disabled the clutch switch, trying to get Key Start to work better. Wasn't enough. So I did a nice job of putting in new 10 gauge engine compartment wire from the battery to my 50 amp momentary push switch (with an inline fuse in that wire) and from that switch to the starter solenoid, and made a nice aluminum plate to mount the switch into (pic in my profile photos).

Anyway for your question what has to be disabled to get push to start to work, you don't need to disable anything. You just bypass everything that was stock. The things I disabled were things I had disabled already just trying to get Key Start to work better.

But the person who put in your push button start might have removed the starter relay. So you'd need to put a starter relay back in. I don't know if the jumper wire works to replace that relay in the 420a wiring. If we needed to figure that out we might be able to from the diagram I posted below, which shows a difference for the 2.0 liter non-turbo depending on whether it is manual or automatic transmission. Or somebody in here would know.

I did run into one bug on my car by bypassing everything. The Start circuit on the 4g63 cars has a wire that goes back to the ECU and it gives the ecu the "KeyStart" item that we can see in our logs. And that is needed to get Cranking Fuel Adjust which is important for cold starts in cold weather. So I had to run another wire from my new Start Circuit back to the stock Start wire to get my Cranking Fuel Adjust working again. I don't know if your 1996 420a has that feature done the same way. The diagram below shows that wire for the Turbo and 2.4 Liter only (shows it as "To MFI System"). And these diagrams get a little confusing!

That's what I was picking at, indirectly. If the starter relay has been bypassed, and now you've removed the only source of power for the starter, you must reconnect the starter relay to restore operation of the stock ignition switch. You may want to test the ignition switch as well.
