NEED HELP choosing A TURBO!!!

This site may earn a commission from merchant affiliate links, including eBay, Amazon, and others.

Sometimes you just gotta pay to play ;)..

I only recommended a turbo thats most common to reach 550-600awhp (like the op asked for) by most self-tuners...

If you wanna talk about potential... isnt the HX40 bigger?

EDIT: for the sake of cluttering the OP's thread... lets just say.. IM wrong, your right, i know nothing, you know everything :) you are a wiseman after all LOL

To the OP. go for the holset HX40

dayum this is hard.. LOL i heard alot of good things from Fp turbos.. i just found out today about the hx40... i have alot of homework to do =] LOL

Some compare it to a GT35R; the HX35 would be closer to a 60-1 / 30R. The HX35 will outspool the HX40 by 300-400rpms in the bolt on housing.

You're a quick learner. :thumb:

FP vs. Holset, BB vs. journal bearing, blah...blah..blah. There several forums about this, no need to bring another up with the same exact people speaking what's and what's bad.

Like I said before, 1997_gsx_mar needs to worry about other things before stepping up to the turbo with ALL stock parts that he has now. It's not that easy going from complete stock to 500-600hp and in the long run money maybe holding you back. Focus on the necessary first thing. Worry about the turbo later.

im just gona do my homework on the The HX35 since it spools quicker! and ### all will i need to install this turbo..? at the end the Fp turbo will cost alot more right?

ROFL ok.. i sed i have a built 6bolt! what does that mean that i know my 6bolt will hold up to ### my goals are! and my 7 bolt that i have on my gsx right now is mostly stock. thats not the motor im going to buy the turbo for.! and thats why i sed in the begining! my last step is to buy a bigger turbo. :)

What you will need to install the turbo depends on what hotside you go with. With the bolt on housing you can get it in an internal gate configuration, but i doubt this will get you to your goal and control boost well enough. Our you can get the bolt on housing with an external gate off the 02, this seems to work well for me an others. This housing can be used with your stock manifold.

If you go with one of the stock hotsides, there are a few different ones. You will need a T3 or T4 manifold (divided or undivided) and external gate for sure, and a custom downpipe.

This would hold true for both the hx40 and hx35

Yes, but just putting your "built" 6bolt in won't net you anymore power unless you have other mods, which is what we don't know, and why I asked earlier.

Sorry, I didn't read it all. Just update the profile like what fuel system you running, head components, etc... I really I now idea what you have except for a built 6 bolt and what you goals are.

yea its fine i understand its my fault for not listing ### all i have done to my 6bolt.. but i don't feel like taking the time to wright every mod i have done. =] its just i hate the fact how people think I'm stupid telling me to do something El's that i already have done. there not even answering my questions. LOL but whatever =]]:)

Sorry for the assumption- I figured you had to work for them in order to recommend a $1465 turbo that requires a $400 wastegate and $425 o2 housing to your average DSMer.

For now I'll stick with my $1300 setup that has more potential and is fully rebuildable for a mere $90 in parts in the event of oil contamination or some other issue. What do replacement cartridges for 30R's go for?

$400 WG & $425 O2 housing? Yes we all know the FP stuff isn't the cheepest but its not out of this world expensive, like the Holset users make it out to be :p

Normally they use the Tial 44, which is an expensive gate but its V-band & like anything else with Vband, they cost more. Though it shouldn't be hard to pick one up for much less then $400. I believe they can also setup the turbo to run the new MSV valve, which is right around the cost of the old Tial 38, so your cost for external is neither here, nor there.

$425 for on O2 housing? Their std 2.5" O2 housing is $250 & $25 extra for their dump. So $275, which seems to be in line with other SS O2 housings on the market. Yes the 3" version is alot more but whats the going rate for a similar 3" vband for any other turbo? Probably in the same ball park? (or you can always have your own custom made just like you'd do with any other turbo, if you can find a better price).

Sure a non BB is cheap to rebuild but how often do you see a BB unit go bad? If you have a BB version that never needs a rebuild & you have to pay for a non BB rebuild, then where's the deal ;) What is it to replace a BB center section $450 or something? Not everyone can rebuild their own turbo's so if they have to send it out to a "professional shop" to have done & they have wheel damage, etc, they'll be looking at close to the same price anyways.

All the Holeset users claim their so much better because their cheeper, they spool quicker, they make more power then their Garrett equivelent, etc, etc. Yes I'll agree they are cheeper, & looks like they have the spool edge but looking though those results page, I don't see everyone running one that has "insane" numbers compared to what a similar sized Garrett would do. Just like garrett, for a certain sized turbo I see some guys that make less then they should, some typical, some more & some rediciously more. Everyone likes to choose the guy that makes way more power then he should & say, see how much the Holset is better then the Garrett? There's just as many guys (actually probably alot more) Garrett guys that make stupied amount of power on turbo's that are much smaller then they should be to make that kind of power.

I think we can go in circles all day here, some like Garret, some like Holeset, etc, etc. Its all personal opinion & unless its a new turbo to this market, there probably more then enough info already on this board to help the purchaser descide what route he wants to take.

If you don't like people telling you to do and you've already done that then just update your profile or else you'll be dealing with what you think are rhetorical questions in the future.

yes i will do that once i do drop in my 6bolt.. because right now i have everything listed from ### my gsx has on it now.. :) sorry for the misunderstanding

You'll never see 670whp with a PTE DSM bolt-on housing and an internal gate. That's quite a claim on their part.

I have less than $1300 in a new HX40, a BEP T3 turbine housing, a new ERL cast stainless manifold, and a used Tial 38mm wastegate, and that setup has the potential to make 700 to the wheels on certain builds.

ditto

I paid less than 900 for my 7 blade HX40 rebuild billet wheel and bep t3 housing and im hunting for as close to 700 as I can get.

Its hard to beat a Holset with the cost/perforamnce

Just posting what I'm reading:

FP Custom 3" SS O2 Housing for FP30 Turbo

TiAL 44mm vband Wastegate

Sure you could get away with the $250 o2 housing (FP Custom 2.5" SS O2 Housing for FP30 Turbo), but if we're going balls-deep here we might as well spare no expense.

Personally? Three. Two were oil-related, the other had a damaged wheel.

The owners couldn't justify the replacement cost of the cartridge which, at the time, was $800. All of these customers are friends of mine who are now running Holsets with great success.

I think we can go in circles all day here, some like Garret, some like Holeset, etc, etc.
I've rebuilt enough Garretts over the past 7 years to not recommend them to anyone. Sure there are some good ones making lots of power, and this obviously doesn't include ball-bearing turbos as they're not serviceable, but I've literally seen more Garrett turbochargers fail for absoultely no reason than any other brand.

where could i finde me a good holset turbo?

eBay, Diesel forums, turbo shops; although you can bet none of these will be ready to be bolted on your car as-is. You'll have to piece together your setup with available housings and such, but it will be worth it in the end.

This has been discussed many, many times in the multiple Holset threads on this site.
