Need advice. Quote for new motor.

I am typing from my phone, sorry if grammar is off.

My balance shaft pulley snapped and I had it towed to a local performance shop. The pulley snapped in half. I am aware I need a total rebuild or a new motor. The shop said they could import a motor from japan that would garauntee to have less than 55k miles on original motor with a 90 day warranty. He said that would be around 1500.00. He said pulling and installing, fluids, and everything would be about 1000.00 labor.

The situation is, i will be getting an army loan, and they require a quote. I had the shop quote me at 3000.00 so I can do other modifications while the motor is out.

Does 2500 for everything sound ok.

You're in Clarksville and it sounds like you're military. There isn't a decent DSM shop in that town, unless it opened up in the past 2 years. For a town that depends on the military for their livelyhood that sure rip you off every chance they get.

They have an auto craft shop on post. Right next to the flight simulators. Bay fees are extremely reasonable, plus they have a great staff that can answer any questions and help you rebuild the engine. It's not really that difficult. Every tool is available, engine room to rebuild it and place to store it so you can take your time.

Check them out, order a head from Stangmurdera on here and do it yourself. Counting the head, doubt if it would run you more that $1,000 for a completely rebuilt engine.

I know a few people who have had there car built from Thomas Lewis, and my friend from back home who had his car towed here, to have thomas build it. I am aware of the Tuners post on him, but I am not sure what to think on it. Many shops around here are pretty legit, seeing military is most of there business. They do not want to be blacklisted by the Military post.

I am eventually going to buy a 3rd car to use as a DD, but right now money is tight due to some family issues. I am prob going to go full motor route, and worry about a build later.

Your not taking anyone's advice, so why post? Just the fact he told you the rods were bent, and whatever else without tearing it down tells me he is only in it for the money.... He wants to buy a whole new engine because thats easy as hell to just swap engines with a new running one... Wouldn't be worth more then 500$ labor imo to swap just the engine with a new one...

My friend just got his 250k mile 240sx 4 banger rebuilt by the local shop for 3,000(This is a high price, but includes all the new parts needed) and that is the same engine with all the internals redone, and all the machine work to the block, etc. Like everyone has been saying you can buy a GOOD NEW Head, and throw that on. (check your pistons for damage of course.) And now you could have a built head with port work and upgraded for the same price as the labor he was going to charge you. (And have arp headstuds, etc.)

I am posting because I needed options, and that is exactly what I have gotten. I don't think you are remembering that my car is in a shop, that is charging 70-80 an hour for anywork they do. I am looking at a few hours for them to take the head off and inspect the pistons. I am looking at an hour for them to take cover off to inspect all the damage the oil pump sprocket has done. I am taking my own money situation in account for the decisions I make. The easiest route for me to get back on the road would be just dropping a new motor into my car and building it at a later time.

I am mostly just worried about any other damage that could be caused in the block, and wasting more time and money inspecting the block.

If you oil pump sprocket is really broken then i'd be leary to. Did they give you a eta on the new motor? Or do they already have one sitting out back? If they have to source one from japan you'll probably be with out a car for awhile. I'd try and find one local first because as you said your on a time crunch, im sure looking around here on tuners or your local classifieds might be fruitful.
I'm sure lots of fellow dsmers would be game to help swap your motor for beer and a good time haha I know I would.

They said they order JDM motors from 3 different people, with me having car back within a week. and yes, the sprocket was snapped completely in half and was laying in my driveway.

I am actually talking to someone with a rebuilt long block, with 272's in the head already. I might be in luck

I'm sitting here reading this thread trying to figure out what all this talk about JDM and "importing over from Japan" is all about. There are literally tens of thousands of 4g63 engines sitting around in this country. Miller alone probably has about 100 of them.

^^My thoughts exactly, right now I can walk into any pick your part /or wrecking yard, pull a 4G63,G4CP, G63B, 4G64, G64B, G4CS, G4CN, full motor or small block have it inspected cleaned up, and slap it on my dsm and it will work for a while for a d.d [absent high boost or stupid abuse]
I mean come on so many older Mitsubishi/Hyundai/Chrysler imports have used variants of the 4g63T motor it should be stupid easy to find one in a junkyard.
many of which were non turbo second cars... meaning less abuse.
If I were in the ops shoes i'd tear down the block, and see if it can be saved, if not ditch it go to a wrecking yard get a good bare 2.0 or 2.4 block with crank, and make a whole new setup for the car.
actually this might just be the one good excuse that you needed to go the 4G64/G4CS 2.4 stroker block route.
