Hey all, just had one quick question that i couldnt find in the FAQ, I'm in the process of removing my 7bolt motor, When removing the engine do you have to remove that transmission also? Or can you just pull out the engine? Anyone have a website or info on what needs to be done, all i have i san article that shows a guy removing the driveline and transmission with it. Let me know thanks.

You can remove the engine without removing the transmission. But in my experience its easier to remove them both together and its not all that hard to remove the trans also. The problem i had with removing only the engine was supporting the transmisson while the engine was removed and it took longer than expected to align the bolt holes and get the trans bolted back to the block. Maybe it was just a one time thing but im goin to always remove the tranny with the engine from now on.

When you say remove the tranny with the engine, you mean keep the transmission bolted to the engine and remove all as one piece... or remove the transmission and transfercase first then proceed with the engine removal?

He doens't have to pull the trans, or support it in any way. He has a 2g, which means that three of the mounts are on the trans....

three transmisson mounts?!?!?...next time i see a 2nd gen ill havta look under the hood to see that ish...ussually theres 3 motor mounts and a transmission mount (aka roll stop)

So yours saying one 2nd gen theres 3 tranny mounts and xxx? motor mounts?>

post a picture of that

You can remove the engine without removing the tranny and yes three of the mounts are on the tranny so you will not have to support it that much. I removed my engine about three months ago and I was removing the block with the tranny in the car. It was coming out but I got it in a jam and finally just removed the tranny as well. It came out a lot easier as one big piece then it did as just the block. Plus I had to remove mine through the bottom which made it harder anyway. Oh yeah I had it on Jack stands and no engine support from above. Good ole manpower and a lot of cursing. To answer the question though you can remove the engine by itself but save the pain and just remove it together. If I remember correctly it was really hard to get the input shaft from the tranny out of the engine without at least moving the tranny back a little bit. Sorry this is so long.

It is going to be easier with a few things in mind (actuall on hand). First off, do you have a cherry picker? If you're going to pull it straight up, it would be much easier with just the engine. If you have the car jacked way up and pull it from below, then it's easier with both.
I have had experience from trial and error both ways. I find it easier to drop the tranny then pull the engine.
However you do it, GOOD DAMN LUCK buddie. :thumb:

This will be my first time pulling the engine out of my DSM. My question is; Is it easier to pull the block and trans at the same time or is it best to just seperate them while still in the car. I have a bran-new shortblock going in this weekend and I have everything torn down to the block and trans. It looks like it might be easier to take them both out at once... Also same question for the install. How far do most people assemble the engine before installing it? Do most people install with it attached to the trans? Thanks for the help :thumb:

I took mine out and intalled it with the tranny attacheched. It's easier in my opinion if you do it that way especially for installing it. As far as assembly. I would put everything together while it's on the stand for better access, you can leave the manifold of because it's not to hard to get to but the more you put together on the stand the less you have to deal with while it's in the car.

Agreed, it is much easier to take the motor and transmission out at the same time. But to elaborate on the above; make sure you take off the transmission mount and bracket before pulling the motor, it will free up some extra room.

Thanks for all the info guys, one last question as everything is disconnected and ready to be pulled, tomorrow morning im removing the transfercase, which is easier, dropping the motor / transmission out of the car, or pulling the motor and transmission with cherry picker? Let me know, thanks.

Either way, out the top or out the bottom, use a cherry picker, it'll be easier than trying to use floor jacks to lower the motor... Hopefully you have something with wheels to put the motor on, if you're dropping from below... cause you won't be able to pull it back with the cherry picker hanging through the engine bay  but you can set it down on a furniture dolly or floor jack, roll it out, hook it back up to the picker (which hopfully just means sliding the hook back over the chain you've got mounted strategically to the motor) and pick it up to put it wherever you're working on it (at this point disconnecting the trans and hooking up an engine stand maybe?)

Again, depends on the tools available, but however you end up doing it... good luck! :thumb:

Ran into 1 problem over the weekend, How the hell do i get the axle's out? I have a dsm book but any easier way to pull them axles out so i can drop the engine / tranny? Let me know, thanks.

pop the lower ball joint and pull like hell on the assembly. Should free the axle from the hub.

getting ready to do this myself on a 1G.... was really hoping to leave the trans in the car though... Yes have cherry picker Just alot of stuff to remove to get a clear shot of the trans...

Whe i swaped my engine i just took off harnes and engine mounts and pulled it out from the top with trans attached. that was a bit** But if your going to drop your motor i would just take off the axels comepletly.

I just did mine and left the tranny in the car to get it out and put the engine back in.

I used a Engine Hoist and a Engine Leveler and it worked out slick. I highlly recomend and engine leveler as it makes tipping one side of the engine easier as you need to do it.

Actually I may leave the trans in. After all I am taking engine out in 3 parts.
intake/exhaust mani's, Head then block...

Why, gives alot more room, and the head gasket is bad anyway. and not keeping the motor (the kid that I bought the car from wants it to put in his laser...)

And will save alot of trouble dealing with popping the ball joints...

Exactlly I left the tranny in to save time on axels and suspension crap. I hate that stuff. It's really not that hard puttling the entire thing out or taking it haf apart and then out.

When we drop min back in it was a fully assembled engine and took a little moving to get it into the tranny but nothing like it would have taken to remove the axels and tranny and crap. Leave that tranny in there, and go out the top with the engine.

Just drop the tran with the engine. That way you can clean out the bell housing and re-grease the release fork, folcrum, and release behring. At least that was my train of thought when I did mine. Just some added security.

Okay I have the head off, intake and exhaust manifolds off. Now my goal is to take the block out without the tranny. I dont want to remove it becuase it doesnt seem neccessary. I am not changing my clutch becuase it has about 50% life on it and I want to get all my money out of it! I just want to pull the block out but how? If any one can help it would be greatly appreciated. I have taken off the waterpump, pulleys, and all belts so I have about 5 inches of room on the tb side. but how do I get the block off the tranny and out of the car?

Also what aout the AC lines I would prefer to leave it assembled however I guess it could use a recharge. Any ideas on how to do either?

thankyou
