Hey all, just had one quick question that i couldnt find in the FAQ, I'm in the process of removing my 7bolt motor, When removing the engine do you have to remove that transmission also? Or can you just pull out the engine? Anyone have a website or info on what needs to be done, all i have i san article that shows a guy removing the driveline and transmission with it. Let me know thanks.

yeah, you can actually just drop the trans out of the bottom of the car and change the clutch that way. It's a lil easier than pulling the motor (in terms of disonnecting harnesses, fluid lines, vacuum lines, etc...). :talon:

Sort of off topic, but if you pulled the motor without pulling the tranny, would it be possible to change the clutch?

the clutch is in b/w the pressure plate and flywheel. the pressure plate is bolted to the flywheel, the flywheel is bolted to the crank via 6 or 7 bolts (hence the name "6 bolt" or "7 bolt") and a spline from the tranny just goes into the clutch, that is the only way the clutch and tranny are connected.

hope this clears a couple things up

You dont need to mess with the ball joints, just remove the two bolts that holds the strut/shock assembly to the lower part, the thing that the ball joint connects to the control arm, that thing. Pull tranny out with the engine, just like every book i've read says to do.

I recently pulled my motor in process of the swap had no problem pulling the motor and leaving the trans 1,2&3

i was wondering if anyone has removed there 7 bolt from a 2g gsx, without pulling the tranny to. Everyone who i read doing it this way has either a 1g or a 2g gst. I tryed for about 3 hours yesterday but cant get it to come out. thanks alot

I have a small twist to add to this discussion. I just got my mits on a 95 tsi auto (fwd) for my wife with a bad block. With an auto, if I unbolt the torque converter from the flywheel, should I be able to get the engine out without the transmission if I clear up a few inches of free space on the opposite side of the engine?
