Well my buddy ended up having to part his car out because he got married so I picked up this setup off him for dirt cheap(so cheap I'm not even gonna say, but thank you Matt!)and I'm very excited to get it installed.

Now what I have here is a PR ewg o2 housing with a Tial 38mm wastegate and a FP18g that has been ported and modified to work with the ewg setup. I will be having jusmx rebuild the turbo, and I will be re-recirculating and cleaning up the o2 housing. :sneaky:

The FP18G has been so hated on because people have thought they assembled their with Kinetic parts but I talked to both Amber and Brian(one of their turbo assemblers) from FP and they both said they manufacture their own products. I had this turbo on my old 2G, thing made tons of torque.

Part of the mess that is gonna be cleaned up

The turbo which is in good shape, just has a decent amount of shaftplay

Actually the 18G that dsmdeliveryboy has is a true MHI unit built from a MHI Small 16G and using an older non-water cooled center housing. NeMiZiS, yours was a 18G-6SL2.

Perhaps FP built the 18G-6SL2's in their day, but there's no denying that none of the parts on those turbos were actual MHI parts.

That makes me feel even better Lol, you excited for this one Jus?

Way ahead of me!
Everything on my car is bone stock except the turbo.
The 18g came installed in the car when I got it, but the previous owner ran it with no V-band clamp!:ohdamn:
So I had to rebuild it, because I was worried about damage from it being ran with out the clamp.

Ok my mistake, not the same turbo :D

Should I be? I rebuilt three just like yours in the past year alone, and I have one of my own which has a machined 14B cover on it.

That means I'm experienced. ROFL

He means your FP 18G-6SL2 is the FP18g that is common for failure or something of that sort and mine isn't one.

And yeah I was wondering if I could run this on my car without bigger injectors on just wastegate pressure? The wastegate has a 14psi spring in it, and I have a walbro 190 rewired but will have injectors and link installed soon.

Just means that yours was an actual MHI unit with OEM-quality parts, and his is not. Doesn't mean his is junk- some 18G-6SL2's are reliable, some are not.

No I had the 6SL2 on my old 2G, it was a awesome turbo for me :) I don't see anything wrong with them.
Exactly....some have no issues at all. When I rebuilt NeMiZiS' 6SL2 there was evidence of balance grinding on the nut, so at least FP is balancing them as a rotating assembly which pretty much assures a good lifespan. As long as something freak like turbine breakage doesn't happen, the turbo should last a long time with a good oil supply.

The biggest complaints I've heard about the 6SL2's among DSM owners came from thrust plate wear (causing in/out play) with very low mileage. There were a handful of Subie guys that reported random turbine fin breakage as well.

Yeah the turbo only has 10k miles on it, is not water fed, and he wasn't running a restricter of any kind in the feed line that I am aware of(this was on a 95 tsi awd).

It's nice that your DSM is coming together pretty well. I'm interested to see how it turns out. Good luck!

For what it's worth, nobody ever said FP was related to Kinetic....that would be Slowboy. FP's 18G-6SL2 does not use any MHI parts, so the question at hand was where are these parts coming from. I don't believe FP has the power to manufacture turbine and compressor wheels in-house, so they're obviously buying these parts from a supplier of unknown origin.

Your probably right. Who knows though.. I don't care enough to look into it that much Lol
