Hey guys....just picked up a 1995 black auto gsx with a k03/05 turbo....has fmic upper and lower ic pipes, and aftermarket exhaust. On startup the car runs good, and pulls stronnggg but and starts to sputter once warmed up and stinks of burning oil. After a 30 minute drive a HUGE cloud of smoke is following me and people are looking around at the traffic lights.....

(i drove the car to pick it up from queens ny)

Its currently parked as Im trying to resolve this issue. There is also a ticking noise but that may be the lifters/something rattling...havent gotten that far, hoping for the best...

Can you advise me where to start? I was told to check for shaft play aswell as the valve seals are shot. Is this motor toast? should I just drop a new 4g63 in?

I bought it for 1300 bucks, bod is pristine, only the front bumper is peeling a little.

Note...** the motor starts up perfect, and when boosting, is an animal.....the sputtering happens at high boost, but when reading my boost guage only says im hitting 5lbs then drops....

Do a compression and leak down test. If oil is getting past the rings you could just rebuild it for cheap. If your turbo has shaft play you can have that rebuilt too. Make sure you do all your maintenance too, you can never be sure when the previous owner changed the oil, timing belt, or filters.

I've been drinking a little, but I tried to comprehend what you were asking and answer as best I could.

Boost leak test while you're at it.

Best advice i have for you is to do your research start getting your hands dirty and find out what your working with. What color is the smoke? Things like that will narrow down some of the problems to look for. I too have a 95 these cars are getting old man its a never ending battle as you will find out soon. Good luck.

Valve stem seals or turbo seals are my first guess but do a compression test and make sure the motor is healthy first then go from there.

Pull your intercooler and see how much oil is inside.

Check to make sure your PCV system is proper.

Check spark plugs.

^^ Second the valve seals and also the color of the smoke, turbo seals is a possibility but you would see it more often and when spooled. Perform the pressure tests needed to diagnose IE leak down, boost leak and compression, hopefully you need a timing belt anyway. Makes it easier if you just do it all at once to pull the head for gasket, seals, water pump, and valve seals. Just my .02

After reading your OP again, you should definately perform all maintenance as if you didnt think it was done. Fuel filter, oil change, BOOST LEAK TEST and replace all worn air leaking seals. Also check the whole line that runs to your boost gauge, if you feel like the car is pulling hard but its reading 5psi it may be kinked or t'd in to the wrong vacuum line. Again just my .02

Thanks guys ill pull the fittings to the turbo and intercooler today....Ill keep you updated, thanks again.....ehy for 1300Bucks im not complaining...

It had one scratch on the driver door, front bumper paint is peeling by the liscence plate and a little rust by a headlight, the dumb previous owner removed the wiper but thankfully left the parts in the car.... It is getting stripped this week hopefully and brought back to oem before any serious upgrades.....perfectionist at heart......

weather permitting ill take the stuff off today at 4:30 and let you know.

Thanks fellas....even if the motors blown I can always swap one in....its running perfect other than the boost cut out(leak) , ticking and smoke. But all these symptoms show when cars warm

I dont think that motor is blown with what you describe, fix the boost gauge first sounds like you may be hitting fuel cut if it is pulling really hard and you are only reading 5psi the gauge is bad/incorrectly hooked up. Then you will know with a leak down/compression test combo how healthy the motor is FYI.

Motor feels real strong on startup....likely to be a bad turbo, doing a compression test in the next two days....will know more then.....worst comes to worst rebuildddd
or jdm swap

Ran a compression test and.....175 across the board. Now what

what else could be wrong....didnt check the turbo, could valve seals still be shot? ticking noise is coming from evap control

yeah thats my next step, plugs are completely clean, normal wear, not fouled....has to be the turbo

Took it to the mechanic to get an oil change, car barely smoked, said block was recently rebuilt.....got a steal on the deal and turbo was most likely shot. Also noticed there is not moost guage and the lines for the turbo are kinda....weird, he said to turn the boost down....

anyway trannys is acting kinda funny too, hard shift sometimes, im thinking throttle position sensor. idle is sporatic so thats the fist thing im changing.....ill keep you updated

Motor isnt blown, hot side of turbo is leaking. Engine was rebuilt leakdown and compression o.k.

Idle surging and hard tranny shifts. Read somewhere to take a look at IAC TPS and o2 sensors, taking it to pressure wash motor tonight, will diagnose tommorow with ohm meter.....I freaking love this car OMG.

Figured out the hesitation, spark plugs were shot.

Car doesnt burn oil.

Map sensor throws a code, ill check the connectors.

Plenty of power.

Still running rich as hell.....need to figure that out

Check/test/replace the coolant temp sensor. If that goes bad the ECU defaults to thinking it is -70* and drops mass fuel

thanks I deffinitely will, also my car is doing the strangest thing

the oil light comes on under acceleration.

hard or soft accel.

as soon as i let go it doesnt do it.

oil levels are fine. Just did an oil change with correct weight.

could the switch be grounding somehwere?

It smoked when I bought, previous owner overfilled oil. PCV was shot and IAC valve/map sensor were shot, so idle was sporatic and dropping low causing a smoking issue, I firmly believe its the oil pressure switch

overfilling will do that (cause it to smoke), sounds like you got a damn good deal there. as far as the oil light, sounds like its the oil pressure switch. can get one at autozone for like 10 bucks
