Well I just ran my first ice race ( I'm still struggling to get the terminology down) today. Just like the autox setup except its a much larger more open track. Saw speeds up around 70 and down around 25. My friend from school let me drive his 92 Talon that we recently went through and redid a lot of things. I think total we put around 28 laps on that car today, and it didn't flinch once. Great car, a lot of fun. Anyways, here's the pics I took:

My other friends also came, one owning the red 318ti. He was running faster than the awd's even!

Then of course, on my 3rd run I came in just a little too hot from 70 on the back straight and plowed sideways into the pile on the side. Ended up losing the door molding on my little offroad excursion:

There should be more pics in the next few days.

Sorry, no in-car. Totally spaced on that when I was out enjoying myself. LOL Next weekend hopefully.

Oh, 100%! That's why my friend in his little 318ti was faster than us in the awd DSM and those subarus. He didn't have studs but they were made to except them.

On the Talon we just had pirelli P4's. They worked, but it wasn't near what the car could've been. All of our times in the AWD class were within about 5-6 seconds which is pretty good on a big track like that.

Even if we didn't set the fastest times, I learned a lot, and had a lot of fun sidways. :hellyeah:

Ice runs is the terminology you're looking for :)

It's a blast being on the ice isn't it? There is really nothing else that can compare to how little grip you have at these events, but since there is nothing to hit, it's all in good fun

It's a real blast indeed. It gets real exciting when you're trying to slow from 70 on the straight down to about 30 to make the corner when you're on studdless....

Best way to describe it is the whole lap is just one big balancing act. You HAVE to feather all your inputs or you'll go sliding real quick. Funny how there really is nothing but snow to hit, but somehow I did damage. LOL

That would be a blast to do and a lot safer than parking lot fun. How thick is the ice that all of you are driving on? What would you say was the hardest part of the driving course?

Not sure how thick the ice was. I would say the hardest part would have to be re-adjusting for the ever changing track. They would run the spiked tired cars first, then the street tires, and back. So the 1st run right after the spikes was the run you got your best time due to them chewing up the ice. After that it got packed down and it was then a drift fest. :thumb:

I was just curious at how thick the ice had to be before they would allow driving on it like this. The drift fest LOL Take some in car vids next time :thumb:

I plan to. Just have to get my friend to be on board again and let me drive his Talon.

Here's a video I found from the weekend before the one I drove on that really shows the course layout. The only difference this weekend was on the back straight they added a chicane section to slow you up a bit. If they would have left the back straight open, I have no doubts the talon could hit 90 on the ice.

Yes, he's on studs.

16" donuts with 90-120 studs, more grip than i expected

I did my second Ice Event this past Sunday 1-16-11. Lots of pics and I have some in-car video! Only 2 others in the AWR class (my friend in his 86 Quantum Syncro, and a Jeep Cherokee), me and my friend are on General Altimax Arctics and the Jeep was on Blizzaks. Our fastest times were in the 100 second range and the Jeep's was like a 101. It was a ton of fun, and plan to do the last one coming this Sunday. My friend twack drove down and took a bunch of pics:
