my 2g all motor 420a journey

yeah it hasnt been that easy for sure but i just wanted to do it since everyone talked down on it. i have alot of muscle car friends that go crazy when i talk about my car LOL
I hear ya on the muscle car thing man, its alway's v8 this v8 that.....america!!! even my other import friends bug me about the dsm, cant hold power breaks every 5 feet etc. so frustrating when people don't know what their talking about.
......but they'll see ooh they'll see and they'll learn.


I'd love to see how much a turbo would bring your 420a to life, 15k's a lot of moola but if you think its worth it then it is. I'll be watching your progress best of luck.:thumb:
 
You don't NEED meth injection with 10.5:1 and 93, will it help...yes... With how popular MS has gotten to be the "standard" build now for most people building these things for boost is 10.5:1. There are quite a few of them in the works now.
 
Jayson, you must have known you were going to get some of the responses you got, LOL. No need to get defensive. Its actually not about what they think as much as what you think. I hear crap and it doesn't mean a damn thing to me. My interests lie in what I have done (as you know, I've done some "pretty big" turbo builds and 4g63 builds etc. Dumped them all because it was boring to me), not what others want me to do. I got a "shine on" button because I love the hell out of what I do. As many have said on here, its your car and your build.

Ironically, I started off trying to do one of those cool "tuner" cars (when I wanted to get back into racing cars) that you could get into the computer and change shit to add horsepower (as in 4g63). But with my ignorance (not stupidity, ignorance; nothing negative about ignorance), I bought one of them damn 420a's :ohdamn::p Heard a lot of talk about how they can't break the 15 second barrier. I laughed at that and off we went. Like you, its something I got into and it grew on itself. Once I was locked in, I just couldn't/wouldn't get out.

So enjoy the hell out of your car and drive it like you stole it :thumb:

thanks man. it will be another long road but i have already gone this far might as well find out what it can actually handle. i have been watching dsmzero to see how much hp he will make this season his build is badass.

im sure there is a lot of them but i havnt seen that many personally. i hear and read alot of stuff since the car scene isnt huge in my area. its more dirtbikes sandrails and boats LOL so its hard to find out what is being done new for dsm's.

my town has 91 and e85, one place sales 95 and 110 but its expensive. what compression do you run? you have some nice numbers how long did it take you to build up to that?

i know i know LOL it was just one of those days i shouldnt of been offended. im just trying to raise the bar for our platform. i believe in it for some reason i just think people in the past have built them wrong and had bad results so others turned away from it. obviously it wont compare to a 4g63 i know but i have seen people hold alot of power turbo or n/a. thanks for the input tho i will probably have more questions for you down the road.
 
I have been bored at home since im off of work for another 3 weeks so i put together a little video if anyone cares to see my car on the street ( i know not that many people care LOL) i just thought i would put this in as part of my build journal. i still need to update some more pics and a few things i forgot to add which will be coming soon.

yeah thats pretty cool and all man but i dont really appreciate it being on my build journal you know? yeah a mivech motor will always be badass compared to the 420a thats not to hard to figure out.

Im just saying all-motor Mitsubishi engines can do it also contrary to popular believe...
 
I would like to inform you of advances in video cameras which would make that a safer thing to do.

In my opinion from this post we can learn diagnoatics. I believe your 1800 expense could have been avoided by posting statistics or specifics of your parts list on this site. your build is actually designed to hold greater pressue, from what I underatand. I believe they sold you cams for a turbo set up and the replacements were for non turbo. if you still have the old cams maybe they could be part of your turbo build.

I have the same engine and if it makes you feel any better ive spent about ten grand and i havent started building the engine yet. i spun bearings at this point and bought another car. briefly 3000 car, rebuilt engine 5000 installed, suspension, wheels and tires, transmission rebuilt. I am planning on getting all of those engine internals and a turbo.

a build can be done to last longer if you commit to a boost pressure. say ten to fifteen psi for example might require new cams but on your internals could last you more than a year.

disclaimer i am not a mechanic nor have i built my engine yet but double check my statement and i believe you will find it to be true.
 
Studabaker the cams I bought were turbo cams meant for the 420a. I did that purposely so I didn't have to buy another set down the road.

Anyway a little update on what's been going on. I took my car in to a shop so I could install my safc2 but ran into a few problems as usual. I had an exhaust leak, timing was still off and my afx ecu was making one of my cylinders run leaner then the rest. So they trued my exhaust manifold and put a new gasket on. I went back to the stock ecu which fixed my cylinder issue. That pissed me off guess I should of went with megasquirt right off the bat, lesson learned. My timing was off a tooth on the crank sprocket and a tooth on the exhaust cam. After that funds ran low and I couldn't even install my safc2.

Shortly after my shop visit my passengers side motor mount sheared all the down by the front of the head where the power steering bracket bolts up. The same shop replaced that for 100 bucks. 700 miles later all 5 bolts that go into the exhaust cam gear (obx adjustable cam gear) fell out while I was driving and slipped. I was out of town working 600 miles from home. Had to tow it all the way back to the shop. It's still there right now but I got good news which blew me away. Cam gear slipped 2 teeth and I drove about a mile to get in a parking lot. The shop removed the head and no valves were broken. Very light nicks on the pistons but the leak down confirmed some valves were leaking. Currently the head is at the machine shop and I'm waiting to hear back. I was totally shocked I was expecting alot worse. I will post of pics soon. But I continue on for my goal of putting a turbo on my car.

Right now I have a 20g, hrc intercooler, fluyidine radiator with slim fans, hrc log header, ported stock intake manifold, sfmu, boost, oil, water and egt gauges. So I'm slowly gathering up parts. Now I'm planning a wedding for next year which isn't going to help my build LOL. Anyone that's actually following I'll keep posting as much as I can. I really want to get on the dyno by the end of the year just to see where I'm at before I go turbo.
