Must be a blown t25?

Anyway i was driving along and then when i was boosting it just stopped going, as soon as i hit 4 or 5 pounds of boost my car wont go any faster. And then the gauge flicks from 5-10 and back to 5 and then when you get it to go to 10psi it'll climb rpms slowly, but if your not hitting any boost car drives fine. I took off the intake pipe and noticed that there is side to side play and up and down. But theres no in and out play. Also no coolant lines where hooked up. I do have a spare turbo in my basement. Its a ebay 16g but i have it so i might put it on this weekend. This is my dd since i just took the 1.8 off the road so i need it back up asap. I also checked all the vacum lines and intercooling hoses and nothing. But im thinking its the turbo.

Why weren't the coolant lines hooked up? This very well may have caused the oil and seals to burn up inside the turbo.

Also, did you notice if any of the compressor fins were damaged? To have your boost suddenly cut out as you described may have been from something entering the system.

Take off the compressor outlet and check for excessive amounts of oil or any debris. This could give you additional clues as to the cause.

Otherwise, assuming you have enough fuel (no clogged lines or injectors and pump is operating correctly), at such low levels of boost, I wouldn't imagine it being pulling so much knock that it's killing the drive. If you have a logger of some sort, it might be a good idea to check what kind of data you're ECU is getting.

its really cold outside and dark but i just drove to wendys and back and its fine if i dont hit boost or its good till 3psi or 4psi then when it wont go and even when i nail the gas pedal to 15psi of boost you can hear all sorts of crap from the engine bay, and it still wont go, all the fuel is okay, i have a snap on modis at the shop im gonna stay after and put it on the lift and see the data

The coolant / no coolant discussion has been had many, many times. As long as the car is never shut down smokin' hot right after a hard pull, then you're fine. Guys have run 16G's without coolant for 50K+.

It's pretty safe to say this turbo died because it's a T25....not because it's a T25 without coolant.

i just got to the shop but the turbo doesnt really have much shaft play, its actually an auto tranny issue. The tranny wont put down the power after it starts boosting because something is ####ed up in the torqueconverter/tranny. So the turbo is still alive, and its like 0 degrees out right now so i think the oil will cool down pretty quick after i shut it off.

Also my front end is quite squeeky, might need some front suspension work.
