Hello all! So I have a 99 Eclipse GST, was running pretty good besides an exhaust leak. Long story short my MBC got figured on by someone that didn't know what they where doing. (I know I should have had it marked incase this ever happened LOL) But instead of 20 psi it pushed 30 and I shut it down. Well when heading back home there was a knock in the 2k-2.4k rpm range. Figured lifter, but then my thermostat went out and she got a bit hot a couple of times. (Found a coolant line spewing, fixed, turned out it burst do to thermostat seize) anyway got that fixed and was driving it home after work couple of days later and went to take off from the stop light and she stuttered real bad and died, thought I herd metal crash. So now Im wondering if I should buy a new motor, Im thinking of using KarKing, they have a reman for 1800 bucks... but Im not sure what that all comes with.. It doesn't show valve covers in the pics... Or should I have a shop rebuild or what?? Im looking for the cheapest best option.. Im trying to stay away from buying used because I don't want someone else's problems LOL. But I don't know what king of condition my block and head are in so I don't know how much a rebuild would be, who knows what kind of machining needs done?

any advice is appreciated!!

The motor at karking:

anyone know what this comes with? obviously not the turbo, but what about the water pump and ect???

Anyone got a 7 bolt engine for sale? :)

Thanks guys, not just for this but all the info ive gathered over the past year from this forum its like a dsm encyclopedia LOL

I did a quick check (font page of the search engine) and I think I checked here too and the first post I clicked someone said they heard good things and I was like good enough for me LOL
I will do more research on them before I make the final decision..

have you hear bad things about them or are you just saying do your research?

thanks!

Lots of the info you will find on this site was written 10 years ago. When the first 2.3/2.4 strokers were coming out KarKing was a source for some of us since they advertised to our group and there were both positive and negative results over the years. For that kind of money I'd think twice about your decision and either get what you have repaired by a good shop or buy a JDM motor and freshen up the timing components/water pump/oil pump and enjoy.

You get out of these cars what you put in. The reason many people think they are unreliable is because they buy a motor from someone and throw it in as-is and expect everything to work then wonder why it fell apart 5k miles later. Then there are guys that spend their money wisely and in the long run are rewarded with reliable high power fun.

There is no way a stock motor/turbo/fuel system hit 30psi so the most you would have been able to do is get fuel cut unless there are a bunch of mods on the car you didn't mention and that wouldn't have ruined the engine. If you had oil issues or other things wrong then that changes things. None of us will be able to give you good advice without the whole picture, fill out your car profile on here, tell us what has been done to it (or say its dead stock), and go from there. It doesn't cost much to do a stock bottom end rebuild and unless you spun a bearing and trashed the crank or main/rod journals or threw a timing belt and lost your valves and head parts you can likely reuse all the parts you already have. Figure around $1k-1.5k for a competent machinist to freshen up the 7 bolt split thrust block (better of the 2g choices) you have now!

Repeat after me DO NOT USE KAR KING!!

I did and it was a horrible experience all around. The first engine I got from them ran for 4 miles!! And then they claimed it was my fault and I that I ran it without oil... After a month of going back and forth, BBB threats, ect they shipped me out another motor. That one lasted 2000 miles and I had nothing but issues with it. After that I didn't even want to deal with them again.

What I should have done is shipped that oil spewed boat achor back to them and opened a BBB claim to get my money back.

Stay away!!
Use a reputable source from a company on here with a good track record. KAR king is garbage.

Youre planning a motor and you havent explained whats wrong with yours. So it died....so what. What have you diagnosed? It overheated...again so what. So did mine two years ago. You should look at some things before you decide you need a whole new motor

Yea sorry I didn't post very much info, I figured it didn't matter. To be honest Im a newbie, But Im with you on being sketch on the 30 psi its what my gauge read but I dont beleive I have the fuel capacity for it either. No fuel pressure regulator... not sure of injector size. But I wouldn't call these cars unreliable, I would call them abused with unreliable owners. LOL.. I babied mine, but as I started to go through my car I started to find hack job stuff.. But Im going to go look at the car this weekend. I towed it to my brothers. But from what he has told me he tried to crank it over and said he herd metal on metal. Coolant in the oil and cam gear arrows are off.. So could be timing?

Anyway I just figured since he heard metal on metal it was full rebuild with machining to be done... I am so NOT going ebay rebuild kit.. Topline and all that is out of the question... but I don't have much money...
so I know im looking at atleast 2k for the rebuild option.. But I alrdy got real nice set felpro gaskets so that saves a little money... But Im not sure about stuff like gasket matching and what not so I guess my gaskets could be useless?

As for the JDM engine I like the idea.. 2400 bux buys you turbo with it and everything... but im worried about getting junk that needs rebuild or a junk yard quality motor...

Im willing to spend around 2k.. maybe a little more... but that don't buy you much if you arnt confident to do the work yourself...

fullthrottle about the oil issue. I just had my oil changed a week before this happened, and my oil light kept coming on so I had been keeping an eye on it checking it every other day.. no oil leaks detected..

what would you guys do? I don't have any well known shops in range.. and the shops in my area have no reviews online im in a small town area.. warsaw, Indiana. So I dont know if I trust anyone around here to do it.. We got a couple muscle shops but I dont know of any tuner shops (I know to stay away from dsm graveyard)

Also not much in parts I don't believe mostly stock..
20G
Big FMIC-not sure the brand
hks ssq <---atm, first hint of how the car was maintained before me LOL
was told walbro 225, doubt it cant hear it.. maybe ebay?
3 inch exhaust all the way back apexi muffler
I believe that's mostly it.. Im not sure of injector size..

thank you again for all the replys!
