i have a question for everybody do you think it is better to run the stock intake pipe with a filter or use an aftermarket metal pipe i just want some opinons on what everyone thinks.

thanks in advance
john

The metal will be better. Smooth inside.

He hit it on the head. The stock tubing has those little ridges which will disrupt air flow, an after market metal one will be smooth and in theory better flowing. Don't know if it will make a HUGE difference but every little thing adds up.

You probably will not feel much difference on the butt dyno with a metal pipe. But it sounds better! It may become more important with the more mods you make, so always a good starting point. Or you could just do the free mod and gain about as much airflow.

The biggest bang for the buck that I got when starting out, was replacing the UICP with a Dave Brode pipe and 1G BOV.

In addition to metal>stock. There is a huge plastic recirulated tube inside the oem one. The aftermarket metal intake have the already removed for better airflow, slightly faster boost response, and in rare cases....another 1 or 2 psi increase in boost.

Plus, Aftermarket just looks sexier.

Wow, that brings me back, I forgot all about how the factory dump tube blocks alot of the intake itself. Thats the first mod I did to the car when I bought it 5.5 years, boy have things changed since then :rocks:

Go metal! It is a no brainer. I first got a MAF adapter w/ 4.5" filter. It made some difference. Then I got the pipe. WOW! It is a different world..a world you want to live in.

As was mentioned earlier, the intercooler piping is something that I noticed nets some really good gains early on for not much money. I recommend the Greddy intercooler piping kit. It works with the stock sidemount and, should you decide that you want to go with a front mount intercooler later on down the road, you can use the same piping. Always nice when you don't have to buy twice! =)

Happy modding.

What do you guys think of the ones from ebay, there a lot cheaper than like dejon and all those other name brands. eBay Motors: 95-99 Eclipse Turbo Short Ram Intake R 96 97 98 GST GSX (item 170274769996 end time Nov-01-08 16:02:30 PDT) I mean, a pipe is a pipe right?

To some extent a pipe is a pipe is a pipe. If you want build quality then you pay the price. If you want to be totally legal in california...you pay for the sticker as well. I got a BOMZ intake pipe because I wanted red couplers. The fit was REALLY tight by the MAS due to a bad pack-in set of couplers. They should have had the correct sizes included. Also, the recirc fitting on the pipe isn't very long so its hard to get a good amount of tube onto the pipe. The finish inside the pipe wasn't very good but it got the job done. I filed down some of the jagged pieces of metal left in the pipe before I installed it.

Bottom line is...you get what you pay for. If I could do it over again, I would go with an Injen because I am in Cali. My next choice would be Dejon or Forced Performance. You have a nice choice of colors with Dejon and both companies are top notch.

I got my intake off ebay as well. Just as the guy above me it's a Bomz Racing. Mine is a black tube though. But it works great, still wayy better than stock, and there only about 70.00 shipped compared to 200-300 for an Injen or something doing the same purpose.

Go with the common sense choice. A sexy aftermarket intake to give you better flow then stock, and go with ebay and save some money. You cant go wrong on ebay by purchasing a filter and intake tube. Now, buying turbo's, intercooler piping, manifolds, and gaskets are a completely different story.

the injen is like $200 ish, its the same design. You can get the ebay copies for as low as $40 shipped.

and you get an extra Filter adapter you can sell to make some money back.

the "bomz" one you got is more because its "bomz" and it has red couplers if you want to add that to the price. But the standard ones with the blue couplers are as mentioned $40.

The coupler that is included that connects the pipe to the MAS is just fine, whether you got the red/blue/or black coupler. I've installed them all. The big problem is the coupler included that connects the pipe to the turbo. It's way too big for the t25. Go to home depot for the right size coupler here, should be ok since it's just the intake track. If you don't trust that, you don't trust local guy puenmo who has the record for fastest 14b which is like 11s, and has ran 10s with a GTXX setup on ebay manifold, and uses home depot coupler for intake to turbo. ;) can't argue with him there

as for your complaint on the recirc. tube, again its the same design pipe as injen. yea it sucks compared to the dejon design, but the dejon pipes are 3x-4x more. but nevertheless it works just fine as is.

as for the smooth finish.. did you check my review..

As you can see it is rough. But hey, you can pay for your $200+ to get a smooth inside pipe. I do not believe there is any proof that the smooth inside is better. Also thanks to current threads on tuners, here is an article on the subject:
ARE Cooling (Aluminium Radiators & Engineering P/L)

Quote:
"Definitely don't polish the inside of tanks or pipes. An ultra smooth surface causes capillary tension on the surface layer of air with the wall & will increase drag..."

you are not getting what you pay for if you are comparing these intake pipes of same diameter with the more expensive ones.

when it comes to bigger piping yea there is no choice but the other vendors and we are stuck paying the premium, but for t25/14b/16g setups, this pipe is just fine IMO

as for carb sticker, does injen even give one for these. if you are paranoid about carb sticker in SJ for an intake pipe, prepare to stay slow if you are planning to build your DSM with all carb sticker parts
