MBC doesn't seem to work

Okay so a couple weeks ago, I installed new upper intercooler piping and a 1g bov. after the installation I took it for a drive and it would boost spike up to about 16, then drop to around 14/15psi. and btw, I was running stock boost before that, with no MBC. I decided to just get a cheap ball/spring MBC to try and get that spike down. After installing the MBC I was not boosting consistent at all and it would spike like crazy and do all kinds of wierd stuff, even after turning the knob to all kinds of settings, it didn't seem to matter.

I decided to jsut take the MBC off and run with the stock BCS again, and now im running steady at around 13/14 psi. I didnt change anything when going back to stock too. Does anyone know why the UICP/1g bov caused this spike, and why it went back down after taking the MBC out?
 
Some guys have good luck, but my experience with cheap MBCs is not a good one.

Tried tuning a customer's car with an eBay MBC once using the general rule of 1/4 turn = 1psi or so. Wastegate pressure alone was around 10psi, we had a target boost level of 15psi. Got the MBC dialed in around 12psi, so I turned the knob about 3/4 of a turn in and the boost jumped to almost 20psi. Backed it off 1/4 turn again and we were back down to 12psi. Frustrated, I threw the piece of shit away and bought him a real MBC.

You get what you pay for. LOL

I've had my Joe P. MBC for over a year now and I love it. I ordered the inline version and he was out so he sent me a Pro-Z which is $25 for no extra charge. They also come with a lifetime warranty...
 
I've been running a hallman, and i like it a lot better than the joe p. On the joe p i had to turn the dial more to turn up or down the boost. The hallman I believe is one rotation per 1 psi
 
What turbo are you running? I found out the hard way on MBC's too, bought a cheap MBC and could never get boost to stay consistant. Went to a Hallman Pro and will never look back. Like another poster said, you get what you pay for.. Especially with DSM's.

The irony is killing me. This is the first noob forum post I've clicked in months. I recently switched turbos, swiss-cheesed my air-can, installed a K&N, etc... An MBC adjustment was in order. I got the same results as above. The funny thing is, the MBC worked great with the China, Inc. Evo III turbine housing and WG actuator. It just doesn't like the stock 14b and stock actuator.

Your results are typical. Get a name-brand MBC, I think I have to do the same. God Bless (I'm not religious) DSMTuners. This is good stuff.:thumb:

i think everyone on here has done this as some point.

I bought the red one on ebay and it was horrible and I threw it out.

then I was like okay I learned my lesson and then bought the hallman pro rx :thumb:



EDIT: I see some of yous talking about the hallman MBCs....basically if you just want a higher psi go with the hallman pro or other REAL one(not ebay).....but if you want like more accurate increase like say by like 1/2 lb increments...go with the hallman pro rx. It uses a different ball so like you can do say 1 1/2 lbs. the spring thats in it is good for like 5lb more than wastegate rate.


The pro rx also comes with another spring for more than 5lbs past wastegate rate.
 
I bought one of those NXS MBCs and I didnt like it. I ended up buying a Hallman instead off of Ebay. Much better quality.
 
The nice thing about the turbo xs one is that since you are front wheel drive, to reduce wheel spin they have a dual stage boost controller.
 
If there's one thing I have learned its that for all intents and purposes with ebay, you get what you pay for.
 
You are correct. The nipple that is in line with the knob goes to the boost source while the one perpendicular goes to the wastegate.

I'd believe instructions would be shipped with it to confirm this, but you can also check their site (I did).

Last thing, whatever you do, have it adjusted all the way CLOSED first and work up from there.
 
okay just checking to make sure. Also, i was just curious as to why after I installed the UICP and 1g bov i would spike up to about 16 and run about 14/15 lbs. of boost, and then after i installed the MBC and removed it shortly after I no longer had that boost spike and was only running 13/14lbs of boost?
 
+1 ebay is cheap but low quality

IMO get a turbo xs high performance mbc if you gonna do it right

I have one of those. There not good for smaller turbos like the 14b and 16g they slow up the spool, Im hating it. But i do have the older adjustable bleeder style, it acts as a boost leak. I dont know about the newer ones(silver). Goin hallman es next week

uh I had an issue like this ,but it was because I didn't seal one of the vac lines i cut into it would over boost and hit fuel cut , just my .02
