Ok, so the stock trans done blowed up. Went and got a used one for $250 with a 30 day warranty a couple weeks ago. I put a new clutch, pressure plate, throw out bearing and slave cylindar on while putting in the "new" used tranny. Well it had been running fine, would stay in gear, no issues at all. Then all of a sudden a couple days ago it popped out of 5th gear while cruising down the highway. Odd...Then it started to have trouble getting into reverse as well. Well today, I was driving, popped out of 5th gear and now it wont go into 5th or reverse. The shifter will go into the 5th gear position yet when I get off the clutch there is just the nice grinding noise....however....I got out of the car, raised the hood, put the car into 5th gear on the trans, got back in the car started it up with the car in 5th to see if it would stall out...it did.

Would I be safe to assume that the linkage is flat just worn out on my car? Its a 94 and to be honest it looks like its never been changed.

To summarize...the shifter will go into 5th position but the trans wont engage in 5th. So I got out raised the hood, put it in 5th myself to see if it would engage and it did and of course stalled out. Do I need new linkage/shifter?

Kinda puzzled because it was working fine for a few days and then it popped out the other day after a long drive and has been crap since.

My money says the 5th gear retainer nut is loose. If you had been driving in fifth does the shifter move (in the car) when you get on and off the gas? If so quit driving it. Drain it, pop the end case off and check the two large nuts on the shafts. Reverse brake synchro is on the backside of 5th. There is a wavy washer that retains it also. Easy to tighten up if needed. If those symptoms don't sound familiar you may just have a worn hub/sleeve but I doubt it. 5th doesn't get that much action.

The shifter would move slightly and then when I would hit the gas, pop. Come right out. I would assume thats what you are getting at?

Im beginning to think thats what happend to the trans before this. 5th gear went first and I would just hold it in gear. Then all of a suddent the trans locked up. Thought it was the synchros but when I took the trans off, the shaft could be wobbled back and forth. I will def take the back off tomorrow and check to make sure its tight.

Yup. Shifter should not move at all. Keep driving it and that nut backs off the carnage isn't pretty.

You're right, the carnage isn't pretty. Ask me how I know...:ohdamn:

Definitely stop driving the car until you fix the problem. Before I knew it was a potentially serious problem, I ignored it and kept driving. Eventually, the nut let loose completely and blew a huge hole in the end cover of my trans. Luckily, that's all that was damaged. A new nut (properly torqued and secured) and an end cover later, I've never had the problem resurface again.

I just checked, the nut is tight..pulled the end cover off, its tight, I even tried tightening it some more. its got some "ears" on it that keep it from loosening up. Ive re-done the linkage a couiple of times now. Still nothing.

Driving down the road, popped out of 5th. I put it back in, did it for a couple days like that and now no 5th at all or reverse.....the nut on the end of the shaft on the trans is tight, the linkage seems to be ok. I have no idea what it could be. This is my second transmission to do this.

You could have broken the 5th/reverse rail. Take off the 5th/rever detent plug on the front of the transmission (don't lose the springs and ball) and look at the rail inside. Work the levers by hand and watch the 5th reverse. If it doesn't move with the lever the rail is broken. Too bad you didn't post back before you put it back together. I would've asked that you check the shaft play as well. That can cause problems but it would also cause 5th gear to rub the case and likely cause issues with 3/4 also.

So, I found what the problem was......I put read the fluid capacity wrong and put fluid in it instead of gear oil....overheated the tranny and boom....LOL talk about a noob.

Its interestin because i have the same issue with 5th gear. I will be driving and when i let off the gas it will pop out of gear. I do not have a reverse atm, but i have not gotten to change out the fluid yet. Coyote, what fluid are we supposed to use when doing the flush?
