I have a 97 Dodge Avenger 2.0 DOHC N/T FWD with the F5MC1 trans and 420A motor. Shortly after I bought it (it had roughly 111k miles on it when I bought it) I had to replace the clutch then the trans itself went. I bought a used trans from a junkyard and had it professionally checked and installed. Car ran great until after I had the control arm recall done then when turning I would hear a clunking sound that I could also feel on the floor board and every once in awhile a slight jerk to the right. I was on my way to my shop and stopped at a gas station and felt a hard clunk then the car wouldnt move. Upon inspection I found a 4 inch hole in the bottom center of my trans near the front and a couple gears lying on the ground underneath. What could have caused this to happen and is the F5MC1 a problematic trans? Should I switch, or can I rather, to the NV-T350??? Any advice would be helpful. This is no longer my daily driver. I bought another car and want to make this my project car. Still looking for a descent priced trans but want to know if I should stick with the F5MC1, so far my luck with this trans hasnt been good and want something that will hold up. Also would really like to know what would cause this to happen in the first place so I can correct any issues and not destroy another trans. They arent cheap. Im finding used trans for no less then 500 in my area and thats a trans with 132k miles on it. Im not dropping that kind of money on a trans with high miles so any links or sites that I could check out to find a descent priced low mile trans would be great too. Thanks!!

Definitely sounds like the pin that holds the spider gears in the front differential let go. but that's just a guess from the description you gave.
