McGregor,
I'm just looking for some verification here to a problem I had with my 5 speed trans....
I have a 96 spyder gs....a rather weak 4g64, all stock.

Where the trans mounts to the motor, there seems to be a chunk missing off the housing of the trans (where a bolt would go) and it's kind of large (at least a sq inch), the upper most bolt. Now I have a thin vein crack about 4 inches long showing up coming from the top running towards the front.

I had a front motor mount (roll stopper) go on me and I didn't replace it for a bit. So I figure that the stress from the broken mount could have caused this but I'm not certain. Is there anything else that could have caused this??? I want to make sure before I swap the motor n trans that this doesn't happen again.

Thanks.

I have only seen that happen when someone try's to draw the trans up to the block with the bolt's when it's not aligned properly. Has the trans ever been out? (Not saying it wasn't your motor mount)

hmm, that might have been it, there's no telling what hack-work was done before it got into my hands. I had problems w/the clutch when I got it, so I sent it to the shop to get the clutch replaced and the starter shield (thin sheet steel between engine n trans) was broken in two pieces. I know the shop I sent it to pulled the trans out from the bottom, maybe they forgot that bolt when trying to drop it out???

as long as it's not possible to have some sort of misalignment issue when mounted in that puts stress on those mounting points. I've look at another trans that had a similar piece broken off of it in near the same location, not near as large as mine mind you...so I'm wondering if it's hereditary for these dsms?

I doubt it's hereditary of DSM's. If any keep an eye on it. If it makes you feel better, my buddy's been driving his 240 like hat for 4 years.

thanks for your replies guys.....you've helped me get a really good idea of how this happened and narrowed down to human error.

One last question though.....if I wanted to fill/repair the missing piece would jb weld suffice or would it be worth welding? I'm a little weary about welding cause I fear it could cause the spyder crack to get bigger.

also I've read that the 2.4 and 2.0 manual trans is the same so I could be able to keep it with an evo 3 swap right?...or have I read wrong??

thanks

You wouldn't be able to weld it, it's cast I believe.
Unless you knew what you're doing, hell I don't like welding cast, and I've been welding for 3 years.
Our cars don't come in 2.4.?

You can weld it but u need to be a professional. I had my bell housing welded by TRE. It shouldn't be that big of a deal if the crack has stopped at a vent or something. You just dont want it to stretch the length of the bellhousing.

good call, i'm definitely NOT a professional welder....but the shop I work at has a full time welder and he welds everything from mild steel to aluminum, so I think I could just bring it in n have him do it if it came down to it....what about the jb weld idea? I like it cause it's pliable until it hardens so I could shape it where necessary before it hardened, where as welding I would have to grind off excess mat'l.

as for the second comment....not coming w/2.4Ls...you're only right for your year...the 2.4 started in 95 in the eclipse spyders, so they DO come in 2.4 from then on.:thumb:
