my brother has a 96 eclipse automatic. The problem is that it won't go into OD,. Is this a TCU problem or is the transmission going out????

If it won't go into overdrive, you probably burnt up the end clutches at some point. I would start with taking a look at the end clutches, easy to take out, easy replacement

I just got mine a week or so ago and changed my filter and fluid and there were pieces, well more like chunks of metal in the pan. It's having troubles engaging in Reverse and slips in Drive

sounds like you were having a valve body problem not shifting, and chunks are pointing towards new tranny unless you wanna do a complete rebuild man

If all other gears shift and hold fine it's the End Clutch as others have said. I had a 96 Tsi that had this issue. When overdrive was engaged and I would give it throttle on the road it would slip like it had a bad clutch feel. Turned OD off and every other gear was fine. Pretty cheap and easy fix for a DIY.
