Confusing Trans Problems

So recentley my car I've noticed when in 5th gear cruising the shifter moves by itself. (when i get on the throttle it shoots back, let off and it shoots up) now when i put it in 5th gear and let off the throttle it will pop out far enough that its not in gear but not in neatual slot if that makes sense.

And when you intial go into 5th no griding or anything goes in fine but when i get back on the gas it makes a werid sound. Not really a grinding, but a whining grind.

also the clutch is screwy. yesterday i was just driving down the road and all of a sudden the pedal only went halfway down and it went in gear but wouldn't move at all. Thanks for any help! I'm so puzzled by this, never seen it in any car.

Have you checked your motor mounts? If you are getting movement, it can cause it to pull out of gear

This is a common problem on the 1G trans. Search for 5th gear popping out. Not sure if it's the same issue as you're having but it's worth a look.

Edit: Clutch to floor could be a crank walk issue. Measure your crank play.

I'd pull the end case of the transmission off and make sure the nut holding 5th gear is tight. That's usually the culprit when 5th starts popping out.

If 36mm nuts loose, tighten as in here: Shifter wiggle/movement while in gear?.

However, instead of holding crank shaft on drivers side (which allows too much play and will slip the clutch), tighten the 36mm nuts on the input & intermediate shafts by placing the tranny in both 1st and 5th gears at same time to hold the shafts (which is the best way to hold them rock solid for torquing to 109ft-lbs). 5th is done by removing the spring pin holding the shift fork, then the fork, and then sliding the syncro sleeve into 5th. Don't do something stupid like jamming a penny or rag between 5th gears teeth as some people say. It won't hold them solid enough and will just cause damage.

Yup. I had this problem on a 1G I bought. The previous owner ignored the problem and the nut backed out and the shaft punched a hole in the trans cover.
