Maaco Paint Job [Merged 2-7]

jokool, That looks good. What color was your car before you got it painted?

My car has always been Black, but if you saw the amount of damage it had after the accident, you would be amazed what a good job they did, they also fixed every other dent and scratch on my car for an additional 200 since they were already painting half the car...so they basically repainted the whole thing.

How good are they at matching colors. Black is pretty easy to match but what about the metallic green on my car?

Honestly, with body work, you get what you pay for..... Unless you know somebody, and you get a hook-up. If you want your car to be a different color, go to Macco, but if you want quality, take it to a real shop and pay for it.

I would say if you want a different color... don't go to Maaco because those places are like puppy mills. The more cars they paint the more money the make. They're not going to spend much time on the details and the prep work. Tape it up and spray. That's what they do. After a while paint flakes off or gets chipped and you see the old color underneath.

This isn't to say that a normal body shop is any different... that's why I suggested finding a inside hookup... a friend of a friend who works at a shop. I've had enough problems with body shops to know that it really pays off big to know somone on the inside who can keep an eye on things for you.

You may even have to promise them things like referrals to people you know to give them the incentive to do a good job. Otherwise, they get paid just the same whether they do good or not. So think like a body shop employee... what you make you want to do a really good job on a customer's car.

I got the following package:
ValvePrep Package ($100)
Supreme Paint Package ($400)
Full Clear Coat ($225)
Gravel Guard ($125)
Door Jams ($100)
Color Change ($30)
Body Work ($30, popped a big dent in fender caused by previous owner kicking it)

It totalled 1051 with tax, it also comes with a 2 year warranty. So it will last *AT LEAST* two years probably longer if it is well taken care of.

Were there ANY defects? Runs? waves?
How much did they charge to remove the dents?
Did the fix them correctly or just bondo? etc.

The quality was great, it was like it came off the show room floor when I first saw it. The pictures I took are actually with the car dirty

The only defect I ran into is the door jams, they missed two spots which was easily corrected with touch-up paint I got from them.

On the dent in my fender they pulled it out sanded it and painted it they didn't bondo it.

They charged me $30 for a dent that was the size of a grapefruit.

Other than the previously mentioned, there were no flaws on the outside of the car and I have looked everywhere they did a excellent job, I am satisfied with them.

The only thing I worry about is how long it will last...I would hope it would last at least 5 or 6 years if not more.

maaco's paint jobs differ from store to store. one over by my place painted my buddies 77 trans am and it turbed out great, the paint was still looking good after a couple years. so then i brought my 89 camaro in there to get the back bumper repainted (costed me 225 bucks) and it turned out like total crap, there were streaks in the paint and it wasnt even the right shade of white paint. so i guess what im saying is you have to be really carefull when you bring it there, because you always get what you pay for

Unless you got some sort of custom lowball cheap package you should have a 1 year warranty against major defects like chipping. Look into it.

Bodywork is like audio installations... it really depends on which person works on your car not so much which shop does it.

Some guys care about their work and take pride in it no matter how much they're paid. They do whatever it takes to get the job done right.

Other guys don't give a damn how much they're paid, they just don't care about anything... to them a job is just a place they kill time with.

And then there are guys who take extra long and still do a crappy job.

It's all luck. You kind of have to be a salesman too... like ask for a bunch of business cards and tell the guy you'll give referrals if he personally see to it that his shop does a good job on your car. That usually gets results for me.

There paint seems really brittle, I got mine painted with the middle one (out of 5) and I have a lot of random scratches in it from frail paint. It is a decent deal though if you don't have a lot of money...


Also they are really stingy with their warranty issues, they COMPLETELY forgot to paint the bottom sides of my bumper, so I took it back to get it repainted (along with a few other things) and they completely disregarded it. Oh well

I'll try I don't have a digital camera this is coming through a scanner. I am going to try Kodaks HQ film and have them boost it in size for me so hopefully I can get better quality pictures up here. In about 3 hours I'll upload some new ones.
